Hello everyone,

Hope you are well and safe.

I might be getting a Z7 soon, and since I can't get a Nikon 105mm F1.4 or the Nikon 85mm F1.8 S straightaway (availability issue), I was wondering if I should get the 85mm F1.8G to use for the time being. Wondering how this lens performs with the high-res Z7. I have used the 85mm with my D800E and it worked pretty well, but want to know how it adapts to Z7, if there is any compatibility issues or performance or accuracy with the FTZ adapter.

Many thanks in advance.

I am currently not in the UK, and where I am right now, only the 85mm F1.8 G is available.
This limits your choice.
I am just thinking if the 85mm F1.8G is good enough for the Z7 resolution.
Are you being mislead by a common internet myth?

No lens is limited by any sensor.

You will get more image resolution with either lens on a Z7 than on a Z6.

You should also get a little more image resolution with the S lens, particularly toward the frame corners near wide open, on either a Z6 or Z7.

My 85 1.8 G works great on my Z6. So much so I may never buy the new version as I do not use the 85mm that much.

The 85G works much better on my Z6 then it did on my D500 or D750 the focus is dead on and very sharp it never was on the other cameras.

Here are a few from last year. I have not used the 85mm this year at all as I use a Tamron 35-150 for all my portrait sessions now.

I will be buying the new 70-200 2.8 to replace my F4 70-200 version at some point this year.

Also, I see no need for the Z7 with the z6 we can already sell any size print anyone ever wants and with cropping in.

Started shooting digital back with the first 2MP cameras. Over 20 cameras later still going. I shoot family and people portraits, weddings, Sports and a little of everything.

Any Nikkor G lens will preform the same way on a Z body as it does on the D body. The S primes preform better on the Z bodies because they are just plain better lenses
I agree that the Z lenses are better than the equivalent F mount options. Though the Nikon 85mm F/1.8G is a very good performer in its on right, at less than half the price . In saying that I had both lenses now I only have the Z 85mm :-)
I also think that the Z 85mm is better, but what did you think of the G lens? Can it resolve the Z7 resolution in terms of sharpness / micro contrast?
I think the 85g is a very good performer ,the areas where the Z is most noticeably better such as the edges . Are of dubious value if you are looking for a portrait lens . I think this is a case of very good vs excellent and you really cannot go wrong which ever you choose

You'd like the Tamron much better even if it was going to be mounted on 36MP. I sold my G after renting the Tammy. I compared the lenses on a D810.

But the Z is worth a one week wait for sure.

i need to stay off this forum. first i was considering the 85s after reading comments, now im considering the tamron. this is unhealthy.

I finally went and got a camera: Sony A7R IV.

But then I used it, and the color of the photo, the flat character of the lens, the poor rear display, and the creepy noise at most images over ISO 400-640 made me so depressed. After using the Fuji for some time, the Sony was no fun at all. Sure the images were sharp, Eye-AF is great, great battery life, but it felt like there was no soul in it. I am not sure if I'm able to explain it in writing, but something just wasn't there. It feels great in paper, but not in real life.

So, I went back to the camera shop again, returned the A7R IV, and got the Nikon Z7. Native Z lenses aren't available so I got the 85mm F/1.8G F mount lens. It works great with the adapter, and that was with body firmware 2.01. It was smoother with the latest 3.10 firmware. The display is high-res than Sony, the EVF is 3.6M dots (Sony was 5.76M) but still looks better than Sony, the handling is better, the menu is better, only downside is the single card slot. But it feels good to use it, and the classic 85mm F/1.8G has a nice character too. I am much happier with the Z7 than I was with the A7R IV.

Going to shoot tomorrow with it, but so far loving it. Got a 2nd battery and 2 XQD cards (64GB Nikon and 120GB Sony).

Finally a great camera.

That is really good to hear and an uplifting post as well. What are your thoughts as to why you didn't get the 85mm S lens?

Mainly because it wasn't available. I'd have been tempted if it was. Also I'll mostly be using it for some commercial shoots and I don't think they'll miss the differences. And the 85mm F1.8 is a very good lens too. But who knows, if I can't keep the GAS in check, I might place an order for it hahaha

The 85 S is so good that just might happen! :)
