EOS R6 + EF 100mm f/2.8L lens test (PICS)

Thanks for your thoughts and samples. I especially like the Macro Marco.

that RF 85mm f/2.0 appeared, with the half way macro functionality build in. Half way macro is enough for my needs as it's more about flowers and not so much about the really tiny stuff for me, and i have a light portrait lens as a light weight alternative for the Sigma 105mm too, all in one lens.
It sounds like the RF 85/2 will be a great fit for your use case. And if you ever do want to get to 1:1 you can throw on an extension tube, or clip on a Raynox DCR-250.

If i would ever regret selling the Macro L, i will simply buy one back for the same price i got for it, assumed the availability will be very good again.
I sold my 100L Macro once, but missed it so much that I had to buy another one a year later! But I do shoot a lot of macro though...
Eventually an RF version will see the light one day, giving even better prices for the EF.
This is the one I’m really anticipating! I’m hoping for even more effective (macro) IS. :-)

I've read your argument for the Raynox DCR-250 solution this doesn't cost any light. That's a very convincing argument. I was checking prices, and it's really a steal actually. Only 70 euro in my market!

Haha! Like i said, i might buy one back later on, but now i need the money for other purposes.

It all depends on if you're really into the 1:1 stuff. You definitely are, I'm not, at least not enough.

IBIS = 5 axis, so that's a good thing. To have IBIS and IS working in conjunction on a Macro could be perfect.

100mm Macro is my favorite lens! It's nearly always on my camera. Waiting for my R5 currently.

My question:

Did the animal eye AF work with butterflies, so that their head/eye is sharp? Butterflies are my main subject.

On the two occasions where I engaged the Eye-Tracking when butterflies were about, it tracked them during flight if I followed them with the camera. But when one of them landed, I chose to switch to the Small AF reticule and aimed that at the butterfly's eye instead. Using the Magnify Button, i could tell that the AF was right where I wanted it. I took three images of that white cabbage butterfly and all three were perfectly in focus. I was unable to find any larger butterflys.
.
I saw a video from an R6 the other day where someone tracked a Monarch Butterfly and the camera was constantly keeping it in focus. I also found the camera would lock focus on bees when they landed.

thankyou for posting.

Were the majority of the images shot with flash?

Hello Katy.... Not at all... most of those images taken did not require a flash. Those images where a flash was used But I did forget to label two of the images as having been subjected to flash use. The two images below were taken with an external Canon 600EX-RT flash:
.
* "R6 + 100mmL - Zima: Off with the fairies".
* "R6 + 100mmL - the last M&M".
.

These two images above are on the 4th set of PICS posted. Since someone has replied directly to that post, I can't correct it. But all of the outdoor images and just most of the indoor images were taken without a flash. Since I was shooting all of these handheld, I generally needed to use a wide aperture to allow maximum light and to generate a shallow DOF. Even the shots of bees used no flash.
.
For people using this lens for Macro shots, they usually have to increase the DOF by closing down the aperture and that means a need for more light. I wasn't concentrating nearly as much on Macro for this reason, although there's some pretty near closeups in those sets where I reached MFD and couldn't get any closer.

Ah,

thanks,

katy
