Best single "Carry-Around" lens POLL

I'm using a 4Mpix S400 as my pocket camera... It ain't a 300D but it's actually in my pocket everytime I walk out the door...

Your idea has a lot to commend it... Cameras like the s50, s400 or even the $250 3.2Mpix A70 make a lot of sense for some DSLR shooters... The same price as an add on lens and a lot of freedom...

Me too - it has enough low end and high end to make it a superb travel lens.

All you need is some simple maths... 11-400 x 1.6 = 18-640. That's an incredible focal range - how big is this thing?!?!

That can hold the kit +those 2 lenses + more?
Don't. The idea of a walkaround lens is not to have to carry every lens you own all the time.

Just now I am using a Lowe TLZ 1 which handles the 28-200XR with the hood in place (or my 70-300 APO). I have side pocket rigs (Tamrac) that let me also carry the kit and 50 mm f/1.8 lens if I want (they Velcro on and off the straps). But I carry those guys very little domestically.

The 70-300 APO is used for pre-planned events -- sports, trips to the seashore -- and is not a "carry everywhere" lens (for me).

Funny guy ;)

Sonded like a really heavy and incredibly expensive lens (or should I say telescope) otherwise...

I apologize to all my European, Aussie & Asian friends. We have a famous childhood song here in the states - "Old McDonald" and every verse ends with "ee aye ee aye oh" so I added that as a special note not to take me seriously. ~ m²

Zoom addicted....have not heard that before...very funny. Almost like buying a car that can go 200 mph and you could never really use what bought.
excellent reportage lens, gets you (and your shots) deep into
action. no halo night exposures. quality matters more than focal
lenght, don't get too much zoom addicted!

I bought my wife an A70 a few weeks ago and it takes very good shots and the batteries last forever. A nice feature is the 640 x 480 movie mode, makes for a cheap video camera if you can afford the memory!. It also has full manual control, apperature, shutter priority etc. It is also very light and compact. It does not have a histogram though.

I use it, good walkaround lens in my opinion. But since I haven't used anything else I can't say it's the best. I have the kit lens but it's not long enough for my walks :)

I have followed similar threads about alternative lenses for the DR with great interest. I have finally come to the conclusion that I want a single lens for 100% of my shooting and it's just not available yet. Having only one lens reduces the amount of gear to haul around, the number of filter sizes, etc. and significantly reduces the issue of dust.

I still have and use a Nikon N90 with a 24-120mm Nikon lens that is perfect for me and my style of shooting.

I will use the DR kit lens until they produce something of equivalent range -especially on the 24mm end. There is no question in my mind that it will happen, it's just a matter of when.
