Is Oly Viewer 3 now phased out since I dont see a download link for it anymore?

When processing RAW files from Work Space, I see some differences vs shooting L SF directly with the camera. The main thing is that the file sizes are about half! When I shoot L SF in camera I get file sizes of between 8-10 MB. When I shoot RAW (14 MB) and use Work Space to apply the same JPG settings to the RAW file and output an L SF image from that RAW, the file size is only 5 MB! By comparison, EXIF-TIFF files are around 45 MB (larger if I select the 16 bit option- but is that even necessary since Oly RAW aren't 16 bit?) Is L SF processed from RAW using a different compression ratio? (It is even less than L F out of the camera!) I saw another thread where other users mentioned seeing the same thing. I used a third party RAW converter (FastStone) and saw the same result- I couldn't get my processed files to be any larger than about 5 MB.

Another question I had about Work Space is that I now see options for Live Composite in the software where I can do both "light stacking and "dark stacking." Am I correct in assuming that this software now allows my non Live Composite cameras like the E-PL6 to do Live Composite now if I process with this software in the same way that my later cameras that do have the feature do it? That would be nice! I also see that I can do focus stacking with it, which means users with cameras that dont do in camera stacking like my EM10Mk2 can use this software for that also!

One downside of Work Space that I found is that I can only download it on one computer for each camera serial number. For example- I have two computers, one desk top and one laptop. I wanted to have it on each computer. I downloaded it to my desk top first using my EM10Mk2 serial. I tried to use the same serial when I tried to download it on my laptop and it came up as "invalid serial." Have others seen this kind of thing too? So I then was able to use my E-PL6 to download it to my laptop. Does this mean if something happens and I have to reformat either hard drive I wont be able to redownload the software again? Maybe I should save a copy of the .exe on an external drive just in case?

No, you are doing something wrong. I have never had any problem installing on multiple computers using same serial number. WorkSpace is free to download and install on multiple computers. I think Olympus just want to make sure you legitimately own the Olympus brand camera.

Gone forever.

The camera LSF is a bloated jpeg without great advantage, the smaller LSF from Workspace makes a lot more sense. In my case I use the LN jpeg from the camera with no pain if for some reason I don't want to play with the raw file.

As an experiment, make a 16 bit tiff from Workspace, then use FastStone Viewer to make a bunch of varying quality jpegs (100%, 95%, 90%, 85%, 80%, 75% 70% with different suffixes of course) from it and then compare side by side at 100% in FastStone to see if you can see any differences between say 100% and 95% quality levels.

For a printing file I would keep above 95% for safety, particularly if a large print. For display on the web, 75% up to 85% depending on the content and the intent of the posting, usually downsized anyway to screen display size as it's silly to give away your images (if it's a good one of course). If someone insists on seeing your image in pixel peeping form, then upload at the original quality level or not more than say 5% worse than original.

By using 100% quality and the Better Quality option for colour got me the largest size jpeg on a random 16MP jpeg from the camera as a source (being a camera 3.5MB LNjpeg which looked good).

File size variations come with sharpening and the one thing I do not like about Olympus camera jpegs and the results from Workspace is that some noise reduction and some sharpening is done even when I have everything set to off or minimum. Typically the camera jpeg has some halo edge and that contrasty edge increases jpeg file size.

There's way way better converters than FastStone Viewer or Workspace, FastStone does not do the usual geometric corrections so wide angle lens results can look a tad fishy at the edges.

Affinity Photo is cheap and darn good if used carefully, getting more capable with each update and so far no extra cost to update. DxO Photolab3 Elite even better but only at discount times. Black Friday for the last two years saw DxO at a rare 50% discount, so time to look is then, otherwise wait for their regular 30% discounts. DxO is expensive to own over the years but, darn, it is good.

No answer there.

That I find totally curious. I only ever download Workspace using the usual lazy serial number of "123456789" and have it installed on different computers at home (five, maybe six?) with no problems. Workspace then works with all Oly raw files I have and will also work with any brand jpegs I have. But I way prefer DxO followed by Affinity.

I agree with you since besides the bloated file size I can detect no difference between LSF 10 mb and LSF 5 mb ha.

Wow, a fictional serial number? I hope I can get that to work lol....maybe I did something wrong, I do remember I clicked refresh when the download wasn't proceeding and then I got the invalid serial number message. Since then the EPL6 serial always works on the laptop and the EM10Mk2 serial always works on the desk top but not vice versa lol.....you dont think the new owners of Olympus changed things do you?

I'll try the other RAW software you recommended, Guy. I bookmarked one of your threads where you made some recommendations but cant find it right now. If competing head to head would you say JPG 100% developed from RAW using FastStone was better than JPG SF developed from RAW using Work Space? There are things I do like about Work Space, including this new Dehaze filter as well as the Vignetting filter they have on there.

I also found a thread where you mentioned how great x2 DTC was and I quite agree! I can see crater detail on the moon which I cant see without it! Do you think a better compression rate is required for x2 DTC though to minimize any interpolation artifacts at 16 MP? Would this be a case where LSF would be more appropriate or should it still be no different from LF and LN?

By the way I'm also experimenting with M size 5 MP x2 DTC to achieve faster continuous bursts and a non interpolated result (well, it's 5 MP vs 4 MP so close enough.) I made a thread about that!

We all need to download Workspace since as far as I know it is the only way to upgrade camera or lens firmware is through this software

Indeed- thats why I have extra copies of it which I intend to put on external media.

I noticed the same skinny LSF files on export. I shoot LSF + Raw, always and only use Workspace to do the Raw conversions before PP in Lightroom. I export the converted raw files as 16 bit tiff files, but just copy and paste the JPEGS (they remain at full strength) If you export the JPEGs, the compression seems to revert to LN (4:1) even if LSF is selected.

This is good to know. So if I understand what you are saying, LSF jpg from camera are the least compressed, while a Raw file processed through Workspace to create a jpg, regardless of settings, are squeezed down a fare amount. That’s just not right ☹️

The real situation is that if someone is worried about every little pixel in an image then they use a good raw converter and output a 16 bit tiff for further fiddles.

That way every little pixel is kept safe and warm until a final jpeg is made at some smaller size and more compressed to show to the great unwashed on the Internet.

True. I use Workspace for my raw converter for two reasons,

Firstly, I use Lightroom and Photoshop as my post processing tools. But Adobe Camera raw does a poor job when converting Olympus raw files, so I make sure the Raws are converted to tiff files before I let LR or PS get their hands on things.

Secondly, I’m a big fan of the Olympus JPEG engine, but like to have a lot of those warm little pixels to work on. Workspace converts my raw files using the same profiles as the JPEGs from the camera. This gives me a nice big snuggly tiff file that mimics exactly the OOC jpeg.

Out of interest what do you do with Sharpness in WS before exporting as tiff. I do the same process as you - raw into WS and then export 16bit tiff to PS for ongoing post processing. I also use Topaz Denoise in PS and have found that setting the Sharpness to -2 in WS (and noise filter off) before exporting to tif allows Denoise to deliver better results in the sharpness it applies.

Thanks, Gary! I thought I was doing something wrong to cause the L SF to become more compressed but clearly this is a function of Work Space. I'll do it the other way from now on since I feel if I use something like x2 DTC I should utilize the least compression ratio that the camera can manage.

Nice settings! These are the default settings I have in camera for my JPG portion of the RAW+JPG combo. But I dont think you should have to do anything for Sharpness in WS before exporting the TIFF since WS should automatically apply your in camera settings to the RAW before export? So if you reduce Sharpness in WS further wouldn't that in reality be more like Sharpness -4? What are your in camera settings for this?

I don’t do any adjustments in WS, at all. However I do leave my noise filter in the camera on low instead of off, and I believe that WS applies the same filter setting to the tiff export. Any additional noise adjustment I make in Lightroom.

I’ll give the sharpness setting a try, thanks.

I have sharpness as 0 in camera and noise filter low so that if I want to use the jpgs (as I take raw + jpg) I have those - WS has those on import of the raw too then so that's why I change these when I work on the raw to export as tiff so I get minimum changes to raw before export. So sharpness 2 on export from WS is same as -2 in camera.

Thanks - i was finding applying noise reduction low and sharpness 0 from WS (which is what I set in camera in case I want to use the jpg as I take raw plus jpg) to the raw is ok on its own but if I added more (using Topaz Denoise AI ilas a filter in PS) it wasn't so good and so started using sharpness -2 and noise filter off when exporting tiff from WS which gave better results from Denoise AI for me. However not sure how the PS tools interact with the WS output.

Sorry yes - using my phone to reply so typo on my part! I meant -2 in camera is same as -2 in WS.
Thanks I'm wondering if my in camera settings at -2 sharpening and NR to off are enough or I should do further adjustments in WR.
