Very nice set but the one titled “Look to the hills” really grabbed me. Beautiful photo and I love that kind of terrain too. I could spend hours hiking and photographing around those hills and fields.

hi Morris, Very nice and tender!! Lighting is perfect to get that nice feel of serenity.

I thought of your series quite a few times today at the Brazos Bend park, you would have liked it there. I even tried to take a few BIF pictures and appreciate the complexities quite a bit, takes a lot of skill and focus (my family did not share the interest and hurried me through). May be next time :-)

But this bird belongs to my father in law 😅, and btw this kind of birds is rarely fly free in my country. Either it can't feed them self or someone will capture it again. Oh well...

This battle took place in one of the streams at the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside NY on Friday morning. I'll narrate as I've removed hundreds of images captured during the 3 minute battle.

-1 The crab in defensive posture claws open ready to strike if attacked.

-2 After a bit of back and forth the heron has taken a leg from the crab who is charging the heron

p3945912167-6.jpg

-3 The heron retreats

p3945912092-6.jpg

-4 They strike at each other. The crab almost got the herons eye

p3945912019-6.jpg

-5 The heron gets a hold of the claw

p3945911939-6.jpg

-6 With the snap of the heron's head, the crab louses it's second large leg

p3945914535-6.jpg

-7 The heron picks up the crab and walks towards me as a cat would do with it's catch to show it off

p3945911822-6.jpg

-8 Then it turns in profile to give me the best shots while it tosses it repeatedly, chewing each time to soften the shell

p3945911726-6.jpg

-9 And finally after about 20 tosses it's down the hatch

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Nice photo. Your cat looks so innocent. I used to have an orange tabby yet mine was a huge muscular 35 Lb critter that the dogs would run from.

Great set Morris.

Enjoyed your commentary!

Thanks Eric,

I've said it many times before, I am incredibly lucky to live where I do.

I have spent a long number of years exploring and photographing in and around that landscape - this is literally on my doorstep.

Regards,

Joe.

Nice capture, Morris

Nice sequence of events, Morris.

There was only ever going to be one winner in that situation :)

Regards,

Joe.
Thank you Joe,

I was surprised how long the crab lasted.
