A Bit of Lonely Macro

With NYC's lockdown squeezing the life out of this vibrant city I've picked up a few hobbies in 2020. One of them has been delving into the world of the small - macro photography!

It can be surprisingly affordable to get into the hobby if you already have a body. I added the 7Artisans 60mm f/2.8 Macro ($150), Godox TT350s ($85), and a light softbox/diffuser ($13). I also picked up a macro mount for my tripod but found that still life macro boring compared to the vibrant natural world around us.

This combination is quite challenging to use. The 7Artisans lens is fully manual without AF and especially without stabilization. This means that minute hand-movement can be the difference between catching the fraction of a human hair that you want in focus and a discarded picture. I find that most of my shots are slightly out of focus, and I'm eyeing a stabilized macro lens to further explore the discipline. Unfortunately, the cheapest stabilized Sony macro lens is $1,100, but a used Sigma 105mm macro paired with my MC-11 seems to be a viable upgrade path.

Still, when I get focus this lens is very impressive for the price. Here are some recent photos:

Nice work! I have the FE90 on FF this is as good.

- By the way, are these bugs already dead ?

Thank you No they were all very much alive and very, very difficult to get into focus.

What softbox diffuser did you get? I made my own, but it was too heavy.... so made a lighter one, and it fell apart in the field... I hadn’t seen any for as cheap as $13! And it looks like it worked really well for you.

I think I use the 6"x5". Folds up for easy storage.

Super impressive macro work. What f-stop and shutter were you using ?

Thank you! F stop varies by available light and subject. I usually try F8 for insects but will try F11 if an insect is "deep" enough to require more depth of field. Shutter speed is on each photo if you hover over them with your cursor. I default to around 1/100s with this lens and increase for movement (of the insect or the plant in the wind) or lower if I want to take a chance when my flash isn't pumping out enough light.

Excellent work

Very nice Brett! I imagine a lot of practice, trial and error went into these, but it was worth it.

very nice series Brent; I had the Sigma 105mm macro that I used with a D7100, it's a great lens for the money

Yeah I really want to see what is possible with stabilization, as my keeper rate right now is very low.

I'm sure that without OSS, your keeper rate is low... but the keepers you posted here look fantastic!

Thank you! Yes it's challenging, and I wish there was a Sony OSS lens a bit cheaper than $1,100!

I enjoyed viewing the series but really like your second image (very interesting).
Thank you! One of the fun parts of doing insect macro is that you "discover" smaller bugs when shooting larger ones. This guy was nestled on the flower that the bee picture above came from, and I didn't notice until reviewing images on my EVF between shots.

Here's an extreme example of that:

The larger insect is about the size of my pinky finger above the top knuckle.
