Can someone in a few words explain the difference between the FE and E mounts? do they both work with A7s and a9? does one of the two give a cropped image? Are the best and newer lenses FE?

OK. E is to FE as DX is to FX.Can someone in a few words explain the difference between the FE and E mounts?

Yes. But APS-C e-mount lenses are not referred to as E lenses. Only Full frame lenses are referred to as FE lenses, by default if it has no FE designation, its APS-C. To be honest it is a little confusing, especially now that Sony has almost entirely focused on FE lens production and bodies.OK. So we have FE and E lenses, both fit all E mount cameras. FE lenses work fine on APS-C cameras, whereas E lenses on FF cameras will auto-crop to APS-mode and use only part of the sensor.

Sounds like something somebody made up. (Note the "citation needed"). Never heard that before. This made me research on the beginnings of the E-mount.
"The E abbreviation of E-mount comes from the Eighteen mm flange focal distance"
A mount are designed for DSLR / SLT cameras and have a longer flange register .What is the difference between Sony a moment and Sony fe mount? I can't find anything on the internet that answers that question.
FWIW, A-mount is the continuation of the Minolta mount, which Sony adopted and maintained after they acquired the camera division of Konica-Minolta. They still sell cameras lenses for A-mount.What is the difference between Sony a moment and Sony fe mount? I can't find anything on the internet that answers that question.
Very accurate! simple and true!OK. E is to FE as DX is to FX.Can someone in a few words explain the difference between the FE and E mounts?

I can't answer your question about the image circle of the Sigma 16/1.4, as I don't own it.I have a Sony A7r4 and wanted to buy the Sigma - Contemporary 16mm f/1.4 which is not FE mount but a E mount lens. I was wondering if anyone here has put this lens on a FE body (A7x/A9x) and how much vignetting I can expect?? I wish Sony made a wide angle under 20mm and f/1.4-f2.0 without costing a arm and a leg!
Thanks!
It is a good explanation. Unfortunately, there is no name of clear way to see if a lens is APS-C only (like DX for Nikon or EF-S for Canon). This is the best explanation yet, thank you and everyone else!
... there is only an E mount. Can someone in a few words explain the difference between the FE and E mounts? do they both work with A7s and a9? does one of the two give a cropped image? Are the best and newer lenses FE?
The E mount cameras can be APS-C or Full Frame.
FE is used to nickname E-mount lenses that support a full-frame sensor.
e.g. SEL28F20 is nicknamed FE28, to describe it as a 28mm Full Frame lens for E-mount.
and SEL24F18Z is nicknames E24Z, to describe it as a 24mm APS-C lens for E-mount with Zeiss label.
So we have FE and E lenses, both fit all E mount cameras. FE lenses work fine on APS-C cameras, whereas E lenses on FF cameras will auto-crop to APS-mode and use only part of the sensor.
The E mount also has such a short flange distance that it can adapt almost all non E mount lenses, including SLR, DSLR and RF lenses, many with auto-focus solutions too.
Sorry if too many words...
I own that lens and will try it on my A7Riii tomorrow.I have a Sony A7r4 and wanted to buy the Sigma - Contemporary 16mm f/1.4 which is not FE mount but a E mount lens.
