Hello,

I am looking at buying a new camera and lens. My budget is no more than $1500US. Main uses would be travel (by car or plane), museums, local parks, conventions, flowers, some landscapes (mostly if I like the view but not a dedicated landscape photgrapher), and airshows. I do not typically shoot sports, concerts, or fast moving children or wildlife. I have read numerous reviews online for different brands/models. The G95 gets decent reviews and is on sale with the 12-60 kit lens for under $1000US. Does anyone here own/use this camera? Would this be a good system for me? My current system is Sony Alpha mount A300, A77, and a few inexpensive lenses and an external flash.

Thank you.

I was planning on renting one or just outright buying it as it is on sale at Adorama, B,&H., and others. I had a temporary budget issue as our company recently started temporary furloughs. I'm hoping the pricing is good in a couple of months from now. I really like the features on the camera and for what I typically shoot , the sensor size isn't an issue.

I've been holding off until new models were released to see what the next GX camera would be like because I like the smaller size camera body and tilting screen as opposed to a flip-out screen.

But I have always admired the G85. It's a well-rounded camera and I think the successor G95 would suit me well. There are some good prices around at the moment where I live (Sydney, Australia) - e.g. body only for AUD $995.

I am going to visit a local store this aftenoon that has a G95 on display so I can hold it and see if I like the size.

I hope you like it. Due to current restrictions because of the corona virus, there are no camera shops open in my area for me to go and check out tge various models. I might still rent one for a week or so to check it out. Buying one will depend on how my finances are. Let me know what you think of the ergonomics. Based on the photos of the camera, they look good to me. Both the G85 and G95 are similar in physical size to my old Sony a300 but are lighter weight.

The G95 is a bit bigger than the G85. The grip is bigger, too. The updated G95 feature set is certainly compelling.

I went to the local store and played with the G95 for about 10 minutes and have to say that I really liked it.

It's actually a great size. For some reason I was expecting it to be bigger but it's a reasonably compact camera. I had checked out camerasize.com beforehand but there's nothing quite like holding the camera in your hands. It was very comfortable to hold - the grip shape and size is great, good grippy textured surface, buttons and dials are all easily accessible. I like the 'wheel' on the back - it makes it easy to scroll through menus.

The viewfinder is awesome in comparison with my GX85 - big and bright and clear. Quite a revelation to me. Operation of the camera felt very fast compared with my GX85, e.g. focus, taking a shot, navigating the menus just felt quicker.

Using this camera would be quite different to how I use my GX85. With the GX85, I usually shoot from the hip, i.e. camera held about belt-height with my hands on both sides (i.e. not using the grip) and screen tilted out to almost 90 degrees, and use my thumb to focus/shoot. I rarely ever hold the camera up to use the viewfinder. With the G95, the ergonomics of the grip and the big viewfinder would probably mean that I'd shoot more traditionally. I tried holding the G95 at belt-height with the screen flipped out and that worked ok although having the screen to my left instead of inline with where the camera was pointing felt a bit weird. I am sure that I'd get used to that though.

So I think that I will probably go ahead and get the G95. I feel that it's time to get my next camera body. It would be nice to have an idea of what Panasonic has coming up next (both G and GX line) but pricing is always high at release so I appreciate the benefit of waiting and getting a decent camera at a lower price.

I found an amazing price on the G85 with the 12-60 and 45-150 kit lenses that I couldn't resist. I placed an order for it this afternoon . I can't wait until it arrives.

Congrats! The G85 has a great reputation. I am sure you will enjoy it when it arrives.

I ended up ordering the G95 last week and picked it up today. I can't wait to go out for a walk with it this weekend!

Maybe it's silly, but I see the G95 as the most capable camera available with a built in flash. This makes it very attractive to me for "dinner and a show" pics. Then I remind my self that putting the little flash that came with my EM1.2 into use is not such a big deal... A GX9 would be a more worthy camera to justify for out and about shooting, due to its compact size and also a built in flash, but I have read about too many IBIS problems to trust it.
The GX bodies are definitely a good size for a walk-around camera. I wasn't aware of the IBIS issues with the GX9. It seems to work ok in the GX85.

That's the first time I've heard that the GX9 has an IBIS problem.

Maybe it's a hangover from all the anti-GX-series rumors floating around. 😜

Thanks. I was debating between the G85 and G95 and came across an amazing price on Adorama yesterday for a G85 bundle. The price was so good I couldn't turn it down. I am eagerly waiting for it to arrive so I can try it out. I'm sure it will take some time to get used to it and adjust all the settings. I already started reading the manual.

Yes, I did the same, downloaded the manual a few days ago.

Pany has organised them a bit better in the G95 and while there are more options, it's all quite familiar.

Have you considered EM5III? It's slightly higher priced than G95 but it's also smaller and lighter, has phase detect AF (makes taking portraits so much easier compared to my GX85 and makes face tracking in video much more stable), better IBIS, a series of bulb modes that produce raw files, high res mode, and a very good implementation of jpeg transfer to phone. While it does lack headphone jack or log profiles in video, it might be a worthwhile trade off.

I personally think that EM5III is the ultimate travel camera.

HI

In favour of the G95,

Better build quality,

Great AF for non moving subjects inc low light,

Very good stabilisation with dual IS

Much better body grip, placement of buttons, good for all sizes of lenses etc,

very good viewfinder

Long exposure mode.

I Would give the OMD 5 MK3 better action AF, Better weatherproofing, and lower weight, especially with new 12-45 and the soon to be matching telephoto.

I Think they are both good cameras, as all my lenses are Panasonic went for g95,

I did look at the EM-5-III but came to the same conclusion. With all my lenses being Panasonic, the G95 was the better option. And if you are already used to how Pany cameras work then you get up to speed very quickly.

The other thing is the price. The EM5-III is at least AUD $600 more than the G95 where I live.

Hi

Add Feedback, good and bad, as a comparison. When you have used g95

Dylan

Just got my new G85 delivered yesterday afternoon. I can't wait to try it out. It is definitely lighter than my 2 Sony's and it is a bit odd to see how small the lenses are.
