I'm trying the Lexar Recovery Tool but it does not allow me to choose a file system type. There is a pull down menu but it is non responsive. Anyone with experience with this? I have a card that says it cannot be read and needs to be formatted but I have some photos on there that I really want to save. Any help is appreciated.

Zero Assumption is by far the most powerful recovery tool I've ever used on windoze. Not sure it would work on your machine given Mshaft's behavior but I'd try it, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain (I've recovered files from badly corrupted drives and cards with this tool)

Hope this helps.

Drat, I tried it, it seems like good software but my computer will not read the card at all. It says I need to format the card. Should I format it and then try or do I avoid trying to format it?

Hmm, can you try another card reader?

Also, make sure your card contacts are squeaky clean!

I'd strongly advise against "formatting" the card.

Zar worked! Thanks! I had to reformat which was scary but then the computer recognized the card, the Lexar software then allowed me to run it but it did nothing. I ran ZAR and it recovered just about everything that I had shot on that card, like 7000 files!

Formatting can go both ways but delighted it worked for you!

If you have the means, consider making a donation to ZAR's author. I do that every time his powerful code saves my bacon (and priceless family history!)
