Anone fancy a D850 sensor in a D3/4/5 body?

Not me.

Just wondered, that's all - (bored with UK lockdown!!!)....
Yes please a D6x With the d850 sensor or even better the 60mpixel one from the Sony a7r4

12fps full frame, 16/20fps at 30mpixel, 250+ shot buffer.

with the above specs I couldn’t care less how much it cost, count me in for at least one.

Well I went on a job yesterday and used the 200-500mm. I hardly ever need long focal lengths normally. The 850 felt like a toy hanging off the lens. Later I decided to clean my pro body sensors (overdue for weeks). The oldest FF I have is the D3 still giving good service - I just wished I could transplant a D850 sensor into it.

Add the battery grip to the D850. With the grip it's actually bigger than the D3/4/5!

It's not just the physical size it's the "solidity". The D850 is well built but the single digit Ds are in a different league. Wish I could correct my typo in the title by the way.

NO!!!! D5 type of body is designed for photojournalism and doesn't need high resolution sensor. It needs something like better ISO performance and such. D850 on the other hand needs to go back to its roots as a landscape camera with 60mp sensor, better dynamic range and such.

Isn't that what we have, with enhancements?

I'd rather have a D5 sensor in a D850 (or even better, D500) body).

What does your D3 offer you that the D850 doesn't? They have pretty much the same frame rates if you add the battery pack to the D850 and use the EN-EL18 battery.

I'm on the opposite end. I'd kind of prefer a D850 sensor in a smaller body, maybe like a D750 but with the pro controls. The size/weight is really the only think I don't like about my D850, but at the moment, there aren't many other options. IMO, the Sony cameras are too small.

*mod: can you approve this account so it doesn't need every post pre-approved?

No,

D3/D4/D5 - is designed for extreme high Speed and high Dynamic Range, medium resolution.

D850 is designed for everything else BUT + high resolution.

I'd like to see that sensor put in to the body/form of an F6. That cameras ergonomics and form factor are the best that Nikon ever did. And its shutter was just so slick. I never understood why that technology did not seem to migrate over.

No.

The high megapixel bodies I like for landscape photography and the integrated grip bodies are totally OTT for this. I am glad that Nikon & Canon moved away from the high megapixel integrated grip bodies. Although I loved the 1DS line of the 2000s I let it go when the smaller and better D800 came out.

I buy cameras with integrated grip to use largely on the monopod where the size doesn't matter so much, and the squareness of the body helps us mount the camera on super telephotos. Yes, not the other way round.

The D850 is a perfectly comprehensive camera already, you can use it with an optional grip and it will give you lots of fps if for some reason you want to spray 46MP at 9fps.

Interesting. Exactly the same here. I had both 1Ds and 1Ds II with 16mp but Nikon D800 had 36mp at he same fps ad Canon 1Ds2 so why bother. The biggest push for me was the shutter lag. Nikon's was so much faster. I could have gone with 1Dx later but shutter lag was also slow. I am wondering now if 1DX III is any faster since Canon reworked it completely with a new shutter.

I lean the other direction. A full frame D5 (or 24MP D750) sensor in a D850/D500 style body delivering 10 fps, a bottomless buffer, excellent DR at base, excellent low light performance and full compatibility with a grip would be very tempting. It'd basically be a modern-day D700.

Hi,

I would not mind one. The D4 and D4 felt so good and solid in my oversized hands. The D850 is fine with the battery holder as a second best but........

Now, I would compromise. A 24-30 MP sensor would be fine for a sturdy and fast body, in my case for wildlife and birds. My theory is that increasing the MP would allow us to make larger prints from the D6xxx-whatever camera but we still would retain the 12-14fps DSLR speed alongside a bottomless buffer.

The D850 is a good compromise for me, reasonably fast at 9fps and huge files for print or crop. However, a superior AF D6xxxx-whatever camera with somewhat lesser MP but topmost sturdiness and prime AF performance would be something I'd like to see in my backpack.

Best to all, AIK

P.S.: do not forget it please, this thread is just theoretical and allows us to fantasize, each of us with our unique thoughts. No need to get over heated about whose theory is the "best"....... :-)
