Lenses you always wanted but will never buy

Well bought! The Nocticron MSRP remains stubbornly at US$1,600 with occasional sales. Used, they fetch near or above a thousand.

Cheers,

Rick
Thank you Rick

There are several sellers on eBay with ratings at 98% who have this lens under 1000 $ and NOT shipping from Asia (extra cost for duties)

and yes I am very pleased by this because I was able to verify that the unknown, hardly ever talked about fact about one of the specs of this lens was true :-)

Which is? I think I've seen you tease that like 3x now... :p

I'm curious, is the focus by wire on the Nocti linear by chance? I know there's gotta be other Pana lenses like that (besides the PL25 and obviously the few ones that have a clutch), but I'm not aware of any so far...

I perhaps could add the PL 50-200 f2.8-4 to replace my existing Oly 50-200 f2.8-3.5, but I think this might be an actual purchase sometime in the next couple of years if used copies fall to less than $500, and also assuming finances permit at that time. I am also interested in the PL 10-25 f1.7, but I so seldom shoot wide that it would be a true extravagance to own one.
IF there are used copies. Was looking the other day and surprised there were NO used copies on eBay.

Yes I am not surprised that the one who got one are not really thinking of selling it or getting a better zoom (cause there is not one ;-)

There are four - all big, heavy, and expensive:

300mm f4 - don't FL use enough to justify expense.

200mm f2.8 - would love it, but cost

100-400mm - big, heavy, expensive, plus reported problems

PL 50-200mm - I have the Olympus 4/3 - great lens, and I'm sure the PL version is also, but can't justify the expense

Probably some others like the 10-25mm - Expensive and I have those FLs covered. Cost to carry fewer lenses = too much.

I these lenses become relatively inexpensive on the used market, who knows? Maybe.

Peace.

300mm f/4

Old guy who wanted to start birding, but found that 75-300 + me requires a tripod.

I had a voyeuristic interest in the Panasonic 200mm f/2.8 but thought I would never buy it because of the cost. A few weeks back 4/3 Rumors posted about the lens being offered new for $1,649 on eBay by a Canadian seller, quickndone. I checked it out, seller has a 100% positive rating with over 15,000 transactions, and has been on eBay for a long time. But I held off and it sold.

Then I checked back a few days later and they had one up again, this time for $1,539 USD. I couldn't resist and pulled the trigger. It arrived two weeks ago, brand new and in perfect condition with the 1.4x teleconverter. I haven't had much opportunity to use it yet, but so far I'm impressed, both with and without the teleconverter.

There currently is no other lens I want.
Well, you're not playing fair if you end up buying any lens you lust after...

I'm curious to see what Oly will do in that space, seeing as the roadmap seemingly lists a Pro 40-150 (f4?) but also two different 50-200 or 50-2XX Pros.
Yes looking at the Olympus road map I am pretty sure that Olympus is going to bring its own 50-200mm or something very similar .

It also shows olympus working on another PL zoom with a 8 or 9 to 25 or 28mm zoom

Looks like Olympus is following Panasonic path these days in terms of pro lens development
Pana already got pretty close to perfect for what I'd want tbh, the PL50-200 is no larger than the 100-300 which is about my limit for what I'd carry frequently, and it's TC compatible... That was pretty much my wishlist before it came out. Have you tried it with the 1.4x TC?
No I have not , I bought the 50/200mm for a trip to Africa in February of last year. I did not think I would like it so much.

I did get the 1.4 tc converter simply because it is not an easy-to-find accessory on its own (it comes in the box with the 200mm lens) as I guess they are not producing a lot of this only for ONE lens . But I have not tried it yet

I know it is going to degrade the lens sharpness so I do not have unreal expectations nor do I think I would use it often with the teleconverter
If I'd have to pick on it, from what I've seen on reviews, I wish it had a tripod collar option and I wish Pana was selling the TC in the US (weird decision not to IMO), but I'm not bothered by buying that from abroad.
yes it is even difficult to find in Europe

Hello Jim

Indeed it is 😊

Micro 4/3, sony 35mm, Nikon z ... You seem to have lots of equipment 😲🤨🤔

For me I never felt the need to have so many different systems 😇
This is going to be a little off topic, but how can you grab your m43 body when you have FF systems ?

Between the FujiX system and GR3, my m43 is collecting dust at the moment, even though I have the finest Pane Leica lenses
Time to sell !!

Looks like I am in the minority but I have to say that , at this point , i have everything that I need . Maybe it is just me but i do not feel an urge to get even a beautiful lens if I know I won’t use regularly

Two days ago I got another great lens ( Nocticron 42.5mm) that I got based on ONE criteria which probably would not matter to many here

Truth be told I have 4 lenses i could use for 99% of my work

Adversely’ i do not like to keep lenses I no longer have the use for so in fact I have three lenses which i am going to put on a sale as soon as I get to it
OK, I'm taking the bait. What's that infamous criteria? The sexy name perhaps?

NOPE 😂

The BIG thing which is a game changer is the fact that the NOCTICRON focal length is not an 85mm equivalent ! It is significantly wider which is going to be a big help for my most frequent work shooting models

I am going to run some more tests this week to try to pin it down but if i had to guess I would say that the real FOV is probably 81mm or 82mm

it may not seem like much but when you are shooting models full length and/or models in small rooms it does make a huge difference...😎😇

You mean Pana-Leica is cheating us out of 3-4mm? Scandalous, ask for a refund! Then again, I would have thought specifying a focal length should by now be more of a science than an art, especially if you go to the extent of going down to a 0,5mm precision. Have you found the same in other lenses?

Have you tried shorter models?

You don’t get it. It means m4/3 users have more focal length options than what the specs say

I am sure it is supposed to be ironic but even with shorter models the wider angle is going to help 😉

Heh, well up to three weeks ago or so, I thought pigs would fly before I ever bought the 200mm lens. No way I ever would have bought it at the regular price of $3K or even the holiday sales price of $2.5K. I'm still a bit shocked to have acquired it. This and the Nocticron are the only lenses for which I've paid more than $1K, and that was a gray market lens at $1,150, IIRC.

I can't imagine shelling out $5K -$10K (?) for the upcoming Oly Pro150-450 f/4.5. But everyone has their own needs and budget, so more power to those who will buy it.

Anyway, I mostly posted just to say that "There's always hope!" :-D

Easy. Nothing on my unslaked wish list. And more to the point - probably not as many as expected that I bought and wished that I had not done so.
Hello Tom

Care to be more specific ? 😂🤔
Reply to the quoted part?

I was being a bit facetious lest I be thought as having more money than brains, I had to add that it was only partly true ... :)

Panasonic Leica 15mm 1.7

Been wanting this one for a while, but when I got a great deal on an Olympus 17mm 1.8, I decided to go for that one instead. I've been made aware that the 15mm is slightly sharper, but I think I prefer the 17mm FOV, and I absolutely love the focus clutch. It's the only focus by wire lens I've ever used that actually makes manual focusing enjoyable. Aperture ring is nice, sure, but I don't think I'll be making the switch.

Panasonic Lumix 42,5mm 1.7

Same here, really. I've got the Olympus, and while pretty ugly and not a great build, if focuses quickly and makes great images. Ideally I'd probably want the Lumix, but is it worth the upgrade? Probably not.

Panasonic Leica 25mm 1.4

I've borrowed this one a couple of times, and it really is a great lens. Only problem is, there's so much competition. There's the Lumix 25mm, which I have. Sure, plastic and all, but it's very cheap, very light, the image quality is more than adequate, and it certainly runs circles around my old Canon nifty fifty. Then there's the Mitakon, which at 0,95 does something quite rare, and there's the Voigtländer, which is the premium version of the same. While I'd like the Leica, I'd probably go for one of the manual lenses if I wanted another 25mm. Although, if the upcoming GX10 is weather sealed, the new PL might be worth considering.

Sigma 30mm 1.4

Another great lens I have no use for. On MFT, the focal length is just odd. I'd consider this on my Fuji were it available. Who knows, maybe one day I'll get an EOS-M or a Leica CL. I suppose there is a slight chance that my Olympus 45mm might be swapped for a Sigma 56mm.

may be olympus' greatest lens masterpiece. Still fetches a a hefty price in the used market. Would love to have one - but wouldn't know what to do with it on a M43 camera, may have to buy a sony A7 to get the most out of it.

That one’s on my list too,

as is the rare and even more expensive OM Zuiko 35-80mm f/2.8 ED. But the one I would most like to own is the OM Zuiko 350mm F2.8

Peter

I'd love an Oly 9-18mm...seems the optics are not bad but the size and weight are unreal.....compared, particularly to the Fuji 10-24mm which I already own.... and it would be silly having two WA zooms of almost identical length.

I am very fond of the Fuji but it's really boofy compared to the Oly.
