Hi all. Just got my a7ii today after being an a77 and 99 user. I am using my alpha lenses with the camera but i have one burning question which has probably been asked before.

if i am going to buy one E lens, which would you recommend , one that is an everday lens for portraits, walking out etc (when we can). Can't go toptop end at the moment but don't want to go kit lens standard. All help would be appreciated.

24-105 f/4 G is a good all-rounder.

I’d have to agree the 24-105 is like the Swiss Army knife of the Sony FE lenses but I suspect from your question it might be a bit higher than your budget just now. Plus it’s pretty big as a carry around lens. Something less costly is the Tamron 28-75/f2.8. Also a sharp lens (by reputation, I don’t have one) it has the advantage of being a faster lens though not as wide or long.

Based on your requirements, for a compact prime I’d suggest you look at the Sony 35mm/f2.8 or even the Samyang same spec. I have the latter and very happy with it. The 50mm/f1.8 is also worthy of a look.

The standard FE 28-70 OSS kit zoom is very good.

If you like your current Vario-Sonnar 24-70 F2.8 SSM, it should work well on the Sony LA-EA adapters. I am thinking about getting a used one--a new one is only $100 cheaper than the 24-70 GM.

E mount lenses are very expensive. I found a lot of old manual focus super easy to adapt with great performance for cheap. I'd start there as MF adapters are dirt cheap.

The Kit 28-70 is affordable, almost disposable (!) at the current used prices.

If not that lens, then maybe the Tamron 28-75 would work for you as an 'everyday' lens
