Rx10 IV, Focus fading with Continuous Shooting

Hi, I posted examples above in the thread.

Fade means, it has focus on the subject and after the camera has taken the shot, it immediately flickers in and out of focus.
+1 - samples, please, even if they're not high art. :)

"Fade" - what does that mean in this context?
Check your files with this app - Auto-focus Visualizer . It'll tell you what the focus system was following at the time the shutter was tripped.
I think the Auto-focus Visualiser is for Windows only? Can't see anything there for MAC?🙄

I must be missing something.....I get this but no image in view.

It's probably because there are no focusing points to display. I think it only works in AF-C. Added to that it doesn't work in all focus areas even in AF-C.

Thanks David. It was an AF-C shot. It might be that I downloaded the wrong thing from that page, I went for the "Win64 executable download", perhaps I should have downloaded something else.
This interests me as I think that focus "misses" at times.

EDITED to say now sorted

Nice one! 'Real time object tracking used'. And there's me thinking only the very latest Sony cams had that focusing feature!

I mean so far out of focus that you wouldn't have any idea what the subject was, which made me think it was doing a secondary focus.
Have you disabled focus with the shutter button?

If not you are'nt really using BBF as intended.
Thanks. Yes, I have disabled focus on the shutter button. The above reference about losing the focus so badly etc, only happened before the shutter button was de-activated.

That was the original image, no editing except for a teeny crop to one side - just to for composition. I did nothing else to it. It was extremely lowlight so I guess that affected the graininess. I was super disappointed it lost focus.

I tried using flexible spot on some ducks in flight, work better, more focus. ISO shot up high though in good light and there was grain. But definitely improved focus.

Hi Keith,

No I believe I have the setting on but will check. I have PRE AF OFF.

So if I disable focus with shutter, this helps tracks, keep the subject in focus?

Thanks Rodger, I will see if that is helpful. The focus drifting is exactly correct.
One thing I had forgotten about. When I experienced the focus drifting off, the focus initially locks on, but as I press home the shutter button, it loses it. Is that how it looks to you? If so, then what's happening is that as you press the shutter home, the camera then tries to refocus again and in doing so, it loses the focus it initially had. One way around this is to set up a back button focus on one of your function buttons. When you do this and press the back button, the camera locks focus and pushing the shutter button more won't have any further affect on the focus, but you must disable focus from the shutter button. In other words, once you disable the shutter for focus, all it will do is take the picture. All focus will be done from the back button. I haven't set mine up yet, but will do so soon. I have it on my FZ1000 and quite like it.

Ah, thanks. Glad I read this before I tried that then.

The camera will not lock focus in AF-C with back button focus. In AF-C the camera is continually refocussing regardless of whether you use the shutter button or any other button on the camera. The camera will lock focus in AF-S with back button focus but it also locks focus with the shutter button and does not refocus when you press the shutter fully down.

Hi Nancy,

If you want to get into back button focusing (BBF) there are several videos on Youtube which explain it very well.

Much easier than my trying to type a lengthy screed.

Hope this helps.

it's about RX1, but some may be pertinent to RX10's

you might want to see Ross Warner's comments here, and some of that thread gets into BBF

Does Ross still work with Gary Friedman?

Thanks Keith, I will do that.

My latest attempt was some ducks in flight. I used Expand Flexible o try instead of Wide with Multi Centered metering. Exposure is awful. Focus was spot on in every single shot.

There was some lowlight. I use Manual but in Auto ISO set to 100-3200. There's just no detail here or clarity. Exposure is crap.

Was pleased it focused well and quickly. I will keep trying in better light.
