SheyTech: Suggestion for a modification

Oooooo interesting will have to try that out

I have never purchased those Pillsbury things ever before so I will go have a look.
Put the plastic cup on the lens, set manual white balance. Remove
plastic cup, and take pictures.

Easier than setting manual WB to a grey card or a white sheet of
paper.

See the other active thread about Pillsbury icing cup. Same subject.

I have a photographic memory, but I always seem to have the lens cap on.

I didn't come up with this one, I am just promoting it as it works so well. I regret that I do not remember who suggested the idea first. But it works so well that I can't keep the tool quiet :-)

That said, I like the way this mod works. It is a little awkward holding the disk in place and pushing the button :-)

Once I implement my WB candidate solution, what is the proper way to test it to see how well it works ? Is there a standard test ?

I want to try stretching a white latex condom over the lens. Its translucence seems to be about the same as the cup and I think it would be easier to handle. If it works, I will leave it on as a lens cap.

I can not found the Grands Cinnimon Roll here..
Is any body know where to buy it on line?? :-)

Best,
Peter
Shay,

Thanks for the suggestion to use a Grands cinnimon roll glaze
plastic cup to easily set manual white balance on the 717.

I immediately went out and bought the pastries and after baking
them up (ummm) and using the glaze, I cleaned out the plastic cup
and experimented with using it to set white balance.

It seems to work very well as you reported.

However, I don't have 3 hands and I was fumbling around trying to
hold the cup in front of the lens and push the buttons.

I think I have come up with a Home Depot solution to holding the
cup in fornt of the lens. Cheap too, about $3.00. Won't scar up
the camera lens either.

I got a roll of adhesive backed WeatherSeal and put 3 pieces on the
inside of the cup. I tried a "ring" all the way around the inside
of the cup, but it was too much, and it did not want to stick very
well. The "3 pieces" solution seems OK so far.

The product to buy. Comes in grey and white, your choice. I think
1/4" thick might even be better.

The application. Note that I cut the front edge at about a 45
degree angle to make it slid over the lens easily.

On the camera.

Let me know if you like this upgrade.

PS: sorry about the last image. I did them quick and dirty, saved
over the originals (I know, I know), and I must have interrupted
the NeatImage save before it was finished. It illiustrates the
idea, I believe.

They are normally refrigerated. I suspect they are never sold on-line. Your best bet is to ask someone here (I don't have even one yet) to mail you one of the cups. Probably some folks have extras.
