Quick question: We all laud the 6D's 20mp sensor as one of the best Canon ever came up with. I am not sure, however, if it's been used in any other Canon body, mirrored or mirrorless. Am I correct that this sensor was only used for and thus "retired" after the 6D?

It was Canon's best sensor in regards to off-sensor ADC types they produced until the latest generations of on-sensor ADC. The 6D sensor has around 12.1 stops of DR (depending on whose measuring, of course) which most previous Canon cameras struggled to get over 11 stops. It was a drastic improvement over the 5D2 in terms of DR, especially in regard to pattern noise in shadows. The 5D2 (I owned two) was a pile of dog doody for DR in just about every landscape I shot with them. :)

The 1Ds III was in the same ballpark as the 6D DR, but if my memory is correct, it lacked in terms of high ISO noise, where the 6D was actually top of the class, and still can be argued as competitive at higher ISO even today.

I suspect Canon dropped using the 6D sensor because they needed to go dual-pixel for on-sensor AF. Also, 20MP was looking a little low in MP.

I don't know if it's the same but the 1Dx2 and 3 also have 20.2 mp sensors.

Ah, right. Good point. And even then, the 1Dx3 sensor looks like an entirely new design and new tech compared to the 1Dx2.

Yep, I believe the 6D sensor was Canon’s last non-DPAF sensor design. Certainly the last FF one.
