Oddly enough, after years of being satisfied with my EM1.1s, and thinking the EM1.2 would be sufficient upgrade, my mind (what there is of it) has shifted. The features that have me leaning heavily toward the EM1.3 are:
  1. Hand Held Hi Res
  2. Live ND
  3. Starry Sky AF
  4. Improved face detection
Not necessarily in that order. Yes, for me paying $500 more for the EM1.3 is worth it.

With more processing, you have to hope that AF will be better too, even if it takes until FW2.

For your concert work I'm guessing the reworked face detection and lower high ISO noise would be a boon. Do you have the Oly test program in your area?

Confess I think the mkiii is a very tempting package of upgrades.

Cheers,

Rick

I will admit that my wife and I both had an acute GAS attack and each preordered the E-M1 III on Announcement Wednesday. However, the more I see revealed about this new guy, the more excited I get.

In addition to the features outlined by Charles, the new joystick focusing, 7 stop IBIS, the option for custom functions to retain current changes, My Menu .... heck even the reposition of the menu button is something to look forward to. And, that $200 Trade Up discount sweetener is kind of nice, too.

I doubt it. I can't even find other people in my area using m4/3. LOL

The menu button will be almost in the same place as my Nikon so that will be fine by me.

The Joystick will also be great as that was on my D500 which I sold to buy the MK II and was really useful for ease of focusing.

The ND finally swung it for me as I hate carrying filters about. ( I may have thought twice without that )

My Mate is in the process of selling all his Canon kit and buying the MK III.

I hadn't really thought much about the joystick. I guess use of that would depend on how effective the face detect is. I was actually about to buy a used EM1.2 at a decent price. Now I have to save a bit more and decide if the $200 trade up is worth it. I'd planned on keeping both my EM1.1 bodies to have an extra back up.

I also really don’t have any camera I wish to use for the trade up deal, so my dealer suggested I seek out an old used, digital, ILC .....nothing fancy and present it as a trade In, it just has to power up and have a serial number. My wife and I both bought used 6mp Canon Digital Rebels for $30 each from an online used camera dealer. Not sure what we will get as a trade in “value” to further reduce the price, but it will secure the $200 discount.

Just yesterday, my wife and I were out with 2 friends that had added Olympus E-M1 II kits to their main Canon 1 DX birding setups about 6 months ago. These friends informed us that they both have just sold their entire Canon 1DX gear in favor of more Olympus kit, including the new E-M1 III.

It took my wife and I each about 6 months to come to the same decision point and jettison our Canon DSLR gear after getting our first M43 kits back in 2013.

Yes, in a way, getting older makes one experience more GAS (in more ways than just one - haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa).

6a9f65b6e5784615ba290fd080bfc792.jpg.png

I'm in my 70's now, albeit physically and mentally still feel like I'm in my 30's, and the only thing preventing my GAS from becoming unreasonable is that my retirement income is a fraction of what I made when not retired. But yes, somehow - if one stays involved on the technological side of things while getting older - the desire to acquire the next best thing does not end, and quite frankly, I hate that!!!

I've remarked ad nauseum on various forums over the years of how jealous I am of another elderly chap who lives across the street and still uses (and now get this) an ole' Kodak Brownie box camera, and a few Kodak instamatic cameras. The photos these produce on film look really pathetic now-a-days, but the guy is absolutely satisfied and beaming with pride when he shows me photos taken with them. And who am I to rain on his parade - heck, I'm envious because he's in a much better state of mental health than I purport to be - sigh.

Also in 70s and enjoy buying photography equipment.Latest was the Fuji xt30 and two led light panels. A few months before that it was the em5.2. I don’t drink or smoke or run around with other women so there’s always some cash available.

I think HHHR is the future of photography. As processors get more powerful no need for FF and bulky equipment. To me if a photo looks like the image in real life that is high enough IQ for me.

Does anything in the trade up say that it must be an ILC or even a digital camera?

Yes, I went over the dealer instructions from Olympus with my dealer and it states specifically any ILC digital camera in working order (must boot up, but no lens needed). I was hoping for a lens to qualify, or an old point and shoot I have, but no-go.

It wasn't clear to me if you currently have the EM1.2 or not.

Some of the new features sound like fun but the EM1.2 is a great camera. I'd rather spend my time using it than fiddling with a new toy.

I'm using EM1.1s IQ is fine as far as I'm concerned, but AF can be a bother in low light concert conditions. My plan was to upgrade to the EM1.2 since the price is down (and may go a bit lower). But that was anticipating a price for the EM1.3 closer to $2k USD. Hence the tongue in cheek question about GAS. The first 3 points I mention are more "that would be really nice to have" than "these would be genuinely important to my work". #4 is important, so I'm following reviews to see if there is a notable improvement over the EM1.2. Seeing the EM1.3 called an "EM1x light" gives credence, to me at least, that the EM1.3 is what an m4/3 flagship camera should be.

Features 1-3 are "hey, I can experiment with this aspect of my photography" and see where it leads. But will there be any return on investment for that compared to savings of going with the EM1.2? That's what I'm mulling over right now.

Buying an EM1.2 in the very near future would still be a notable improvement over the EM1.1, leave me some money for replacing my Oly 12-60 4/3 version (I love the lens, but the "mustache distortion" at 12mm can be a real pain when I'm shooting straight on to the stage or in a gallery.

For some strange reason I love my 12-60SWD. I bought the 12-40 Pro when it’s aperture cable failed but I had it repaired after a couple of months. It’s currently on my EM1.1.

The next time you see people considering going Fuji or Sony, and you scratch your head about it, consider this very post you just made.

Starry Sky AF is something Panasonic had for ages. Honestly, is it really that key to your photography? Sure, it can be nice.

Anyhow, I do think going from EM1.1 to EM1.3 is definitively a substantive upgrade.

Aperture cable?

How much was the repair? I'm thinking that may be what just happened to mine.

Luton Camera did it. I recall around £100, maybe a bit more.

Thanks. I was shooting a baby shower for someone for whom I took pictures of when SHE was born.
When I changed from the 50-200 to the 12-60, the photos were all very noticeably darker (but with GREAT depth of field). I'm guessing that mine may have the same problem.
