Even mistakes turn out cool with a 10D !!! NY???

No, they're not supposed to detain you, they're not supposed to
take anything that belongs to you, they're not supposed to ask you
to delete images or surrender film. All of these have happened,
however. It's hard to argue with a gun-wielding authority, and I
imagine some photographers who don't hold their tongue well end up
making things worse.
Maybe they hope you'll get upset and lose control and then they have a legit reason to detain you.
Unfortunately, given the mindset of the general public, what are
people going to do? I work as a contractor for a jet engine
manufacturer. If I took a photo of a water reservoir, and then put
my foot down and refused to give ID to a cop who cannot legally
demand it, I'm sure they'd just put me in a holding cell for a day,
and the company would find grounds to terminate my employment.
City headline: "Local contractor is a terrorist!" There are
principles, and there are logistics. My wife and daughter can't
eat principles.
Exactly. Same thing when you're sued. You could be totally innocent yet your name is trashed - there will always be some who will believe you are guilty, and you have to spend a fortune on lawyers to fight it. :(
What possible risk is there in using a camera from a public
location? There is none.
The 9-11 terrorists did pose as tourists and took tons of pix. Photos can give lots of details when someone wants to study how something is constructed if they want to blow it up.
infrastructure for some structural weakness, pencil and paint and
laptop and brain work just as well as a camera.
Not as quickly, not as accurately, and not as inconspicuously though.
suspected terrorist has pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge doesn't
mean that we should all give up that liberty to do the same.
True. If just absolutely stinks that we even have to have these kinds of conversations. It just disgusts me that there are people out there that are so sick as to do these evil deeds.
If you've taken photos of bridges, subways, federal buildings,
etc., without incident, GREAT. Not all cops are paranoid. Not all
localities are schizophrenic when it comes to liberty versus
safety. But please remember, just because it hasn't happened to
you, doesn't mean it's not happening.
It angers me that people are being wrongly harassed. :(

Warmly,
Lonnit

Hey dude, you can hijack the thread anywhere you want if you're going to refer to my photography as cool!!!!!!!! :D LOL!

Lonnit
It makes it all the more amusing when people claim that America is
"the free-est country in the world!"
I didn't mean to hijack (er, um, loaded word) this thread away from
lonnit's cool photography. I don't want to get political, but this
is the politics of taking pictures.

I downloaded the PDF file "The photographer's Right" and it said,
"Despite misocnceptions to the contrary, the following subjects can
almost always be photographed lawfully from public places:
...Bridges and other infrastructure...". Interestingly, it also
includes "law inforcement officers". So I guess this means clicking
a shot of the cop who's grabbing for your camera when he stops you
from shooting the bridge! LOL!
Yep, it is supposed to be legal. However, NYC has signage on the
underside... the UNDERSIDE of many bridges, to the contrary.
WHAT??? Ok, so next time I drive over a bridge, I'll stop the car, climb over the side, lower myself down on a rope and check for signs. OH, I get it now... that's how they getcha!!! It's not legal to cliimb the bridges! Now they'd have a right to stop me! LOL!
respect signage if it were posted clearly, that's at least a step
in a legal direction.
Oh, absolutely. I waited 35 years for this camera - I'm not looking to get it taken away with it less than a month old! If the sign clearly says no, of course I wouldn't shoot. I just don't go for traps.
pictures of a Federal Building in Wash DC or many other cities.
Don't thousands of tourists do this every day? If I took a trip to washington I'd be doing it to catch the cherry blossoms. I dont' think I'd be able to avoid getting the federal buildings in the backround!
I really thought of taking a photo of the cop who stopped me.
Being openly antagonistic to authority has its prices.
Oh, yeah. I was just kidding on that! NOT good to antagonize a cop... particularly and NY cop! I'd like to be able to walk away to photograph another day! :)

Lonnit

The third--self portrait--was most interesting to me. Nice jeans.
Well gee thanks... Express's "Riot Siren"! LOL! But I don't really think it was the jeans you were looking at! LOL! This would technically be the 7th self-portrait I've posted here though. The first was my car mirror sig line, 4 more are in the self portrait challenge, the 5th was a fleeting temporary head shot in my sig, and this, the new sig that's been on a few days now. There's also another of me in my winter coat floating around on one of these threads! LOL! I do shoot alot of myself oddly! Oops, just remembered..... move them all back a notch. When I first got here, last month, people kept thinking I was a guy. I posted yet another self portrait to show I wasn't. LOL!.

Then I guess I did my job well! LOL! Did you think this one was
too? LOL!
It's not that you are expensive, but my computer crashes too often. Hehe…
I hate to say this, but you had taken the surprise element out of it for me already. It is still a good shot though. ;)

At 8 fps, a 1D can wear out its shutter in 5.2 hours.
