Lens: Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 S

Camera: Canon 5D.M4

Does anyone have experience with this combination using the Sigma TC-2001 (2.x) or Canon 2.x III teleconverter with this lens/body combination?

I did ask a similar question in an earlier post but didn't receive much feedback with the exception this lens does not perform well with a teleconverter and I would be better off significantly cropping the image. I just want to make sure I exhaust all options and understand what I am receiving before making any purchase.

Let us hope you'll get some answers this time!

I don't have the lens, nor the camera, but I prefer using Sigma's TCs, on the lenses I have, where it fits (for example the 100-400 C, the 150-600 S, and the Nikon 70-200/4.0G)

for the price of either teleconverter new, I can purchase used a Sigma 50-500mm for same price ($400) or Sigma 150-600mm C for ($600). Am I better off going that route?

The Bigma (Sigma 50-500) comes in many variants and not all are equal. That is what I've heard, no personal experience.

The 150-500 I've owned, bit dated by now, and the 150-600 C has a good reputation.

TCs works best with a bit faster lenses, therefore more popular with prime users.

But I'd go with the 150-600!

A few things to keep in mind with TC's.

With a 1.4x you loose a full stop of light, your F6.3 will be F9 with slow focus if at all. You also loose some resolution.

With a 2.0x you loose 2 full stops so your F5.6 becomes a F11 and 6.3 becomes F13 your camera will have lots of trouble with focus at F11 if it even attempts to focus, but wont focus at F13 and considerable loss of resolution:(

The 2.0X is meant for a VERY sharp F2.8 lens like a 70-200 F2.8 L.

I'm with everyone else on this, the 150-600 C is a pretty good lens for the price.

I've written a review recently of mine that I've now owned for 3 years, more out of the fun of writing than for mass reading but it might help you out with your decision - https://t18photography.myportfolio.com/sigma-150-600mm-review

FYI, I still use this lens & I've recently bought a 70-200 f2.8 too, after asking the question, on here, in fact, I wouldn't trade my 150-600 in for a bit of cash and an x2 Tele. It's not worth saving the weight and sacrificing the IQ even if the reach is the same.

Well written, and to the point! I am sure you are right about the difference between the C and S is small, I would even say the IQ difference between the 100-400 C with TC-1401 and the 150-600 S is small at the same focal length, say 550mm.

BUT the bigger S focuses much faster, is dust/water-resistant, and has a lovely bokeh (the 100-400 C's bokeh is quite nice, but not that impressive with the TC on).

I read some of your other blogs as well, nice, keep up the writing, kid!

Thanks for the kind words! Nice to know I'm writing in a way that is enjoyable & easy to read. I always worry I write to complex and waffle too much.

The 150-600 C is also dust/water resistant, although I would guess less so than the S. I always put a rain sleeve over it if it's anything more than drizzle just to be on the safe size.

I will arrive in Thailand during the rainy season next time I come here, so I should bring the rain sleeve! Good idea!

The lovely little 100-400 C is sadly not very dust resistant, and focuses a little slow at times!
