GH6 may also have a 20-megapixel sensor + anamorphic lenses?

My prediction is the GH6 will be like the S1H and will also do 6k recording. So I predicted the GH6 will have a 24-megapixel sensor and will do a crop 6k recording.

While it haven't been confirmed, the Em1.3 is rumoured to have the same sensor as the EM1X. It's disappointing but it also raise the question why aren't Olympus using the GH6's 24-megapixel sensor unless there isn't one. So does this mean we will get a similar sensor to the previous generation of M43 cameras?

Today Youtube recommended me a video of Ordinary Filmmaker and he is either speculating or someone told him some inside knowledge. He doesn't say.

What I found to be interesting is he mentioned 6k anamorphic. Does this mean to competent for the ratio of the M43 sensor, Panasonic will be releasing anamorphic lenses for the GH6. So not only the GH6 can do a full 6k read out with it 20-megapixel sensor but with the anamorphic lenses you can get wide 6k footage instead of going the 24-megapixel sensor root?

I think they will leave 8K to the fullframe cameras. So GH6 most likely retains 20MP (why add more).

However, while the GH5 supports "6K" video recording, it is slightly scaled down from the whole sensor output. The GH6 surely will get rid of this and support full sensor readout with no downscaling.

So 6K60p is my guess for the GH6 headline feature.

How can you have 6k with the current 20MP sensor having a maximum width of 5280 pixels?

Hi Fredrik, i would love it if the GH6 would have a `tilting viewfinder` with a deeper `eye-cup` just like (i think) it was the GX7-GX8 cameras have, also, some kind of built-in or add-on, easy-off ND filters capability, what a heck of a difference these features alone would make to the upgrade from the excellent GH5!! 👍 😎

Either it is "6K" as on current cameras (ie, 4:3) or you use anamorphic lenses and get stretched "6K" that way.

But the entire market for anamorphic lenses for m4/3 is going to be vanishingly small; I can't see how it would make sense for Panasonic/Leica to invest much into that area when there is so much else they need to do with their new system.

Frankly, I'm surprised that the GH6 is even a thing, I wonder how much effort they are going to make with it in terms of spec and marketing.

The second hand market is already flooded with used GH5s, most barely used. Those people won't be making the same mistake again. I hope.

The 6K photo mode on the GH5 is of course a bit of marketingspeak. How can it be 6K with about 5000 columns of pixels? This does make some sense, though: As Panasonic sees it, the resolution (number of pixels) of the "6K" photo mode in 4:3 format corresponds to that of 6K 16:9 footage.

I use the "anamorphic" mode on the GH5 all the time. Not because I use anamorphic lenses, but because I like videos in 4:3 format (from the whole sensor area).

I have to disagree. I think the GH5 is still a fantastic camera, well worth buying at the current prices. I think that the GH6, when it comes, will make a lot of fuzz when it hits the market, introducing yet unseen video specs into the M4/3 format.

I would imagine loads of people bought this excellent GH5 camera, then did not have a clue how to use it, as it is a rather complex camera to learn (video-wise) so sold them and downgraded to an easier camera to work with causing loads of GH5`s to flood the market, when I've heard of some-cameras-only problems before, the answer has usually been that people are forgetting the effect of lens performance, video settings meanings etc or just didn't RTM. loads of people will blame the hardware instead of themselves in many cases!! 😎

While that may be the case for some, so many of the ones I've seen advertised just haven't been used, in fact a couple of times the seller has said "bought for a project/bought to learn video - didn't have time".

I think that many got on board thinking that they needed to get into video, and frankly, it doesn't matter how simple the camera is to use, they'll never make any. So many friends and relatives bought GoPros at some stage, never did anything with them.

Even in this forum, the hype around the GH5 was astonishing, with people going out and buying gimbals, VND filters etc, and so very few ever showed any videos they may have made using the camera.

I really doubt that Panasonic is in a position to hype up the GH6 in the same way as they did for the GH5 and GH5s, and especially at the price it is likely to be. All the social media shills are busy using the other mirrorless systems now.

Even round here there was very little interest in the G9 until it had been out for quite a while, and a price drop.

I think most people just don't have time to learn something like video, and would probably go back to using their phones and publishing unedited clips anyway.

That is exactly the problem. The GH5 is still such a fantastic video camera.

Personally, the only thing I want in a GH6 is better autofocus than the GH5. If it is class leading autofocus I may consider buying after prices drop a bit.

If they can't do class leading autofocus, then I'd want computational parfocal behavior with any lens. I'm sure it is possible - even if you have to "teach" the camera for each lens and focal distance. For example - choose your static subject - rack focus a few times for camera to learn - and then you can do the same when filming without focus changing.

I hope the intro price will be below $2000. Now that Panasonic has full frame cameras to sell at high prices, I think the GH5 may start at $1800. Or maybe I'm wrong.

My other wish list items - but much lower priority than AF:
  • I'd prefer lighter weight - but not at the expense of reliability. So I'll put up with any weight.
  • The setting to make the custom menu settings C1 - C5 auto-update so you don't have to save them each time. But I totally can see why some people want it to only update when you save. So a setting on when it saves.
  • Built in flash.
  • Ummm... hmm. I can't think of anything else. The camera is damn near perfect.

I don't see how your comments are unique to a GH5. Video is indeed complicated, and if a person wants to buy a fancy camera to use - that is his/her choice. I suppose that is more likely on a camera bought for video than photography, but I'm sure there are plenty of used Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sony or Olympus cameras bought by people who didn't get as into the hobby as they had hoped.

I agree the intricacies and challenges involved in shooting and editing decent video are the same regardless of the camera . There was a time pre-m43 where I would have been in the firm "who needs video " club. After getting into m43 first with the lovely GF1 and especially with the GH2 and the hacks that came along for it , I found myself drawn into shooting video. Yes it is a PITA to learn the skills including editing but that does not mean it is not great fun.

When you look at Lensrentals top rented gear by brand Panasonic makes a showing largely I suspect due to the video side . Olympus does not make it onto the top list

The DFD is superb for my uses as in S-AF it is just about as fast as it can get . I shoot manual focus with all my video as I have not find it reliable enough on any cameras I have tried, Including Panasonic, Olympus, Nikon and Sony

The GH5 launched in 2017 at $1999 , the GH5s at $2499 ,the E-M1X came out at $2999 , and the plastic bodied E-M5III with an older sensor etc came out at $1199. I think your hopes will be dashed . Given its popularity amongst the video shooters . I have a suspicion that the GH5 may be the most commonly used m43 camera in a professional arena.

I'm guessing that you mean GH6 above.

My expectation is that the GH6 will be loaded with new, impressive specs, allowing them to justify a price of around US$ 2500-3000, at least.

When they make premium camera models, they make them to be able to sell them at a high price and a high margin.

Yea i would agree with most you have said, however also as you generally state, there are so many variables regarding camera use, i was lucky, my GH5 was given to me as a surprise gift from my partner :-) as i had told her i wanted to learn how to do video, even nearly 2 years later i seem to find another amazing feature that this camera has, mark you, i am a bit of a slow learner 😎 cheers my friend!!

P.s. There is a great second hand site here in the UK, called `MSB.COM` i bought a couple good micro 4/3ds lenses from (i/2 price from new ones) so far there stuff was just like new, well worth a look!! 👍

Neither do I, and that was not what I said; it is just that we are talking about GH cameras here. Note my comment about GoPros also.
