I didn't do it through cloning, I did it through an image backup.
I put the SSD into a spare external enclosure I had lying around. I had my backup drives in another JBOD enclosure already.
I basically just took my brand new clean version of windows and downloaded macrium onto it (making it slightly less than clean). Macrium has a specific button for making a backup image **that can be used to restore Windows** (which seems to be key, because it won't work otherwise). So once Macrium was on my OS drive, I just clicked on that button and created a backup image onto one of my backup drives.
With that backup image, I used Macrium to restore it onto the SSD in the other enclosure. Macrium also allows you to adjust the size of your partitions when you do the restore since the image is usually based on a larger drive and the SSD is usually smaller.
Worked like a charm. And now I have a fairly clean OS image backed up if I ever need to go back that far. I put the original HDD back in the box so that I can deliver a fairly pristine OS when I eventually upgrade my computer and want to sell this one.
