Would these be better with a TG-5 or TG-6?

I have a Fuji XP130 tough camera but the IQ and AF are pretty terrible. I am considering replacing it with a TG-6, but looking at samples online I'm not sure it will be much better. Will a TG-6 do better than these shots from the Fuji, or am I expecting too much from this type of camera? Can anyone provide any samples from the TG-5 or TG-6 in similar conditions or offer any advice?

It's tough to tell from just those three shots...but I believe the TG-6 would be a much better improvement. Some caveats though... Two of your shots were significantly under-exposed. When on the beach you do have to raise your EV to compensate for the light reflecting off the sand. The Fuji does also has a slightly higher resolution (16 MP vs 12 MP) and a bit more zoom (5x vs 4x). But for everything else...the TG-6 should be a significant better camera.

Here are some sample photos from the TG-6 I've taken:
If you pick between the TG-5 and TG-6...I suggest the TG-6. It appears slightly sharper and less washed out. Also the TG-5 has serious purple orb issues...the TG-6 has this too...but it isn't as bad.

Thanks for your reply. Looking at your pictures and some others on Flickr I think the TG-6 will do a lot better than my Fuji. The ability to shoot raw and adjust exposure settings are big plusses for the TG-6. The Fuji is a pure point and shoot with jpeg auto and exposure only so it's hard to get good results.

I just found out the hard way; breaking a memory card "edge" in the camera will require me to send my TG-5 in for repairs and pay the $125 minimum repair. But, I wondered if I should just buy the TG-6. I actually liked my TG-4 better feature-wise but I still recommend these Tough series to anyone that will listen. I think it will be coin toss if I buy the new camera...I probably will and also get the TG-5 fixed so I have a backup.

Here are some TG-5 pics...but, mind you I am shooting in ideal conditions.

Very nice shots there. In my other posts, I expressed unhappiness with the IQ of the TG-6 I recently purchased compared to my other cameras but doing some more shooting with it today, I'm finding it does well under good lighting conditions (like your samples). I like the look and feel of this camera and really want to like it overall so I'll keep plugging away with it.

So I got the TG-6 and after using it today I was pleasantly surprised. It's no IQ monster, but it's definitely better than the Fuji and much nicer to use. I have better cameras that I use normally, but this camera will do fine for trips to the beach and waterparks, which is what I bought it for.

Robert, I recently upgraded from the TG-5 to aTG-6 and I am browsing the forum for posts about using these cameras for general photography (as opposed to underwater and macro). I know this is a 3 month old post but these images are very good. Exposure is just right with very nice blue skies and decent shadow detail. RAW or JPEG? HDR? Heavy post processing? Maybe a circular polarizer?

thanks

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

A PS from my last post.....I did a DUH and took a vacuum cleaner to my TG-5 and vacuumed that broken piece out. So, now I have the TG5 and TG6 which is great.

I always shoot RAW/JPEG at FINE for stills...I do post on everything in LR CC and on a sliding scale of 1-10 with ten being obnoxious post processing with these photos it was probably a 3. I think with these TG series the most I really do is work the DEHAZE slider in LR or Bridge just a tad. If there is good ambient light, these TG cameras do a great job. I mostly just appreciate how "knock-around" crash-proof so I do not have to worry.

Also, I started with the TG4 and bought the wide-angle lens, the underwater adapter and some other Olympus accessories but the only I really need around water is the Olympus floating wrist strap. I have a leftover strap from my Canon D20 waterproof cameras and the TG sinks with that strap.

Hope that helps.
