ERR 99 !?! Why?!

I just received my DR five days ago. I only have the kit lens. I've added a 256MB Sandisk CF card.

Just this morning, after working flawlessly, all of a sudden I'm getting an ERR 99 whenever I shoot. The picture gets stored, but there's no LCD image, and I have to turn the camera off and then turn it back on to clear the error. Then, next shot, err 99 again.

I've tried everything I can think of:

1. Resetting the camera defaults
2. Formatting the CF Card
3. Taking out the battery (recharging) and then reinserting
4. Reseating the lens (Kit 18-55mm)

Nothing works.

I've emailed Canon, but since it's Sunday, and they're probably closed tomorrow due to Columbus day, I have a feeling I can't talk to someone until Tuesday.

Of course, the on-line help is no use...they just re-print the error-code info found in the manual (err 99 = something is wrong, basically. Thanks.)

Does it look like I'll have to send it in for repair? Are there really only two authorized repair centers in the US (NJ and CA)?!?

A Yahoo search shows several results for "error 99 Canon". See if there is anything on those sites that you've missed. Do you have another lens to try?

I had the same problem but mine was not storing the image, just giving a err 99 when I hit the shutter button. I would remove the battery wait tried every lens, flash card combo I had and couldn't get it to work. Bought it online from Ritz.com took it back to one of the local Ritz stores, they replaced it that was about three weeks ago and I have had no problems with the replacement.

I think everybody who has experienced that error code has either had an incompatible lens - usually a Sigme - or a camera hardware problem. I think yours is a camera problem. I would check the lens and body contacts for lint or dirt, beyond that, I'd return the camera to your dealer for a replacement. Oh, one other thing, I'd try a different memory card. There might be a contact problem with the one you have.

Thanks for the quick replies...a google search on canon err 99 shows a lot of issues with Sigma Lens (or some "other-than" Canon lens). I only have the Kit lens EF-S. I'll try the contact-cleaning approach, but I'm not holding my breath.

Since I bought on-line from Dell, I'm guessing my only source of repair is one of the two authorized Canon Repair centers?

Thanks, but the error still occurs when there isn't even a card in the slot. I don't think the camera normally errors out when a card isn't inserted...just says something on the lcd panel.

When I switch the lens to MF (Manual Focus), I can shoot all I want. When I go back to AF, then I get the err 99 again. Bad Lens? Body? This could be the impetus to get my wife to agree to a nice 70-200 APO lens or even an IS USM Lens.

But seriously, I wish I had another lens to try out...it looks like it's still going to go to service...

It's only $69 and is said to be great. Mine gave me a 99 error message one time when i turned the camera on and tried shooting to fast before it had completely woken up, i thought the battery was the problem so i swapped it with my spare and it hasn't given me the error since. Not sure what i did.

The only time I've seen ERR 99 is when I used my 50mm 1.8. I turn the camera off and back on and same thing happened again. Reseat the lens and no problem for the rest of the day. I've also seen that lens stop auto focusing from time to time, but normally it would work again after a quick off and back on. Never seen this problem with all other lens I have.

How do you put on the kit lens. My other canon lens that I had for the film rebel have a red dot that you have to line up with the camera when you attach and with this camera it is the same. However with the kit lens you have a white square and it needs to match up with the white square on the camera, not the red dot like the other canon lens. I know this seems minute, but it is worth a shot. Disconect the lens, take out the battery and put it back in, then put the lens back on. Hope it works.

This from another forum:

I contacted Canon regarding the ERROR 99. This is what they sent to me.

"Thank you for contacting Canon product support. I apologize for any
inconveniences you have experienced with your EOS Digital Rebel.

Occasionally, third party lenses can cause the error you've described.
What type of lens is attached to the EOS Digital Rebel when this occurs?

If you are using an EF series Canon lens, please remove the lens and
clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser. We also suggest that you
remove and replace the battery; ensure that the battery is fully
charged. If the error persists, we suggest testing the camera with a
different EF series Canon lens. Should the error persist with a
different lens, then the camera body itself will need to be examined. We
regret this inconvenience.

For factory service, forward your digital camera (remove the CF card and
battery) properly packaged and insured, with a letter describing the
difficulties. Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number,
and proof of warranty (a copy of your sales receipt). Send to the Canon
Factory Service Center at the following address:

Canon Factory Service Center
100 Jamesburg Rd
Jamesburg, NJ 08831
Tel.# (732)521-7007

or

Canon Factory Service Center
15955 Alton Parkway
Irvine, CA 92618
Tel.# (949) 753-4200

Your equipment will be examined and you will be advised of the findings.
The length of time for the repair will be dependent upon the nature of
the repair and availability of parts if needed. If the repair entails
something that is not covered in warranty you will be sent a written
estimate to the address that you have provided.

Please note that our U.S. Factory Service Centers are unable to accept
packages from or return equipment to addresses outside the United
States.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

Chris

Sounds like the lens may be faulty... If you have any local shops that carrry EF compatible lenses you might be able to try one on your camera and see if it works...

It would focus perfectly...then freeze when I pressed the shutter button with this blinking error. But I tried 2 other Sigma lenses, not APO but regular and they both worked fine.

It is the new lens that work, the old one need to be sent to Sigma for service. If you just bought it, sent it back for and exchange and insist in the one with the red trim, the II not the I.
