there was a big fall festival at matterhorn nursery here today (nyc 'burbs)....among the usual hayrides, pony rides, pumpkins etc, there was today, a raptor exhibition. it was very, very cool. my four-year old boy was "rapt" for the full hour (and in the words of bill cosby, "those of you with children, you'll know what i mean...") lol...anyhow, it was a great day for shooting and i managed to capture the below birds.
falcon at rest:

falcon in flight: (who says the f717 can't do action??!!!)

and this bald eagle was truly majestic:

it was a great exhibition! no raptors were harmed in the making of these photographs....

Hey Andy,

Great capture of the falcon in flight. How did you do it?

thanks a lot for the compliment, harry! coming from you, you've made my day ;>

believe it or not, this was one out of one shot - the birdman gave a little preamble, then set the bird off on a little flight - so i had about a minute to prepare. i snuck away from my wife and boy so as not to be distracted...i was about 100' away i would say, from where i thought the bird would be flying by.... then i watched, waited, and did the a slow pan as he flew from right to left... it was very bright so i think this was at 1/500th and f4....quite ideal i would say. i tucked my elbows in and panned and squoze... and, was very pleased with the result! love this f717!

so my oldest son was perusing the birdman's website, saw that the pics there were sort of lame, and offered up mine.... not sure if he'll take them but we'll see...

Andy, don't you just hate the wait till you get home to see if your shots have come out in focus, no matter what they look like on the LCD screen!

Well done, I bet you had a grin from ear to ear when reviewing these ones on your PC.

thanks, richard! y'know, i did have a bit of a smile when i opened up these images! and i know exactly what you mean, i've been fooled by the lcd, at 1.5" everthing looks sharply focused! the more i work with the 717 the better i'm getting at it. thanks so much for your kind words.

have an excellent evening!
