Withdrawn from challenge, why?

In general I really like the challenge images. The winners usually are amongst the best images in the challenge: and some of them are superb. What I find odd is that some photographs are withdrawn after voting imho for no apparent reason: in many cases they are quite excellent. I guess that the photographer has the attitude that "my images didn't make it into the top 10 and I feel embarrassed that the voters didn't appreciate my talent". It is always interesting to look at those photographers profiles and the challenges that they have entered.

If I had this attitude and withdrew any images that were not in the top dozen, I would have over 70 fewer images in my challenge list. Of course I feel that those 70 images should have been voted higher of course :-)

... Just an observation that has no real relevance this close to a chilly weekend...

I had been asked by a member who found my entry interesting by PM, why the withdrawal....

Not necessarily so. I speak for myself.

My calculations are different, if in a challenge of 100 entries, a photo is within the 30 tops, it is a good outcome.

When you see well crafted photos (recognizing that are even better than yours) which had been over run by mediocre photos with poor focus, tilted horizon lines, poorly cropped or not at all, a far cry from reaching a perfect target as for what is requested in the challenge....plus showing an inconsistent voting pattern (5 or 6 top 5 stars, maybe 2 or 3 votes of 1star and nothing in between (obvious cheating )...it is upsetting, disrespectful to participants and sheer mockery. You do not want to be seen there.

I don't know if it's the same image or not, but I was disappointed to see your entry Lake Enol withdrawn from the Best Landscape of 2019 challenge. I know I liked it well enough to give it 5 stars, and it would have been nice to have seen it again once the voting was over.

Thank you for your note. I was very upset so I “pulled out”.

You can scroll at my gallery, you will find the image there, I keep a doble in case someone wants to see it. The title of the image gives it away.

No! No! This is so much fun, it gets better by the minute, with all the cheaters being caught! it is as much fun as voting. Just follow the comments and findings of our unofficial Cheater Investigator tasad.

Oooops! Maybe is the official and we do not know😃it.

Indeed this has been both entertaining and educational. I just hope the powers-that-be do not get as ridiculous as the unnecessary deletion of the Asian beauty challenge when addressing artificially perceived issues.

I have a slightly different criteria.

If my entry ends up within 1 star of the "winner", regardless of how many are between it and mine, I think to myself that my entry was not too bad :-)

Hum! That is interesting. You mean, one star difference of the total of stars scored by the win entry?🤨

I don't see anything wrong with withdrawing images after a challenge is over, especially if the image was uploaded solely for the purpose of the challenge.

I also often withdraw images given that you cannot stop anyone from downloading at least a copy of it if they really want it.

I have withdrawn from this challenge. There are only two other entries. One looks like it has serious JPEG glitches, the other like someone tried to see how far the noise reduction slider in his software would go. It would have been stupid to win the challenge, and even more stupid to lose it. With so few contenders, the outcome is basically random according to what the voting algorithm decides to make of the minuscule vote numbers.

I don't mind if an entry of mine ends up placing last: that tells me something I did not know before. But in this case, it would not have told me anything. It would just have been an aggravation. And in the unlikely case the vote lottery would have ended up making me win the challenge, it would have been a very uncomfortable win, one where flashing my photograph on the DPreview home page would have felt entirely random and undeserved. Let someone else get that honor who is more likely to appreciate it.

Ok, maybe it wasn't the best choice: turns out that I still do feel responsible for the eyesore now gracing the DPreview pages because of a tied double winner of this two-entry challenge decided by a whopping total of 4 votes.

To me, it looks very estrange the graph pattern of votes in both entries.

The challenge fine print touts vote tallying by "Bayesian principles". I would not be surprised if for just two people voting on two pictures and picking different winners, the algorithm handwavingly described in that manner would equalize the vote effects.

So the unlikely event of two people picking opposite exact scores for two pictures becomes the more likely event of two people picking opposite orders for two pictures.

A few more of those hardly visited challenges, and we might be able to deduce more of the secret Bayesian sauce applied to the votes.

I appreciate the explanation....I love Physics, but it has been a long tome since I left Quantum Physics for Photography. 🙄🧐😂😂

Unfortunately, there are more cheating voters than fair voters, so when a photo of mine wins one of the last places and before it many photos that are no doubt, at least in my eyes, less good - I withdraw my picture.

I do not want to cast pearls before swine !
....I do feel and share the pain.

I strongly agree with this, and I did so too.
Interesting. This is something that has never concerned me since none of my photographs are particularly interesting or valuable.
