I am a 1D/1Ds shooter and I'm going to buy my wife a 300D. I always shoot raw with my equipment and my wife shoots jpg files with her current camera, a D100. I don't know that much about the 300d other than it produces excellent images that are typical of canon and is quite a bargain.

Is it possible to shoot jpg files only without shooting a raw file?

For those that have the 18-55mm lens, what do you think of the image quality?

Do you like your 300D?

Thanks in advance and take great pictures,

DD

Yes, the default is to shoot in the best JPEG format. On average my jpegs have varied from 1.4 MB to 3.9 MB and when opened in Photoshop, they are about 18 MB. You choose between three sizes (X by Y pixels) and between two compression settings. So that makes 6 JPEG choices plus Raw.

Have you shot raw and compared them to the jpg? If the jpg files are like the ones from my 1D and 1Ds, they require very little post work and look beautiful. I shoot raw for the additional control in my work but my wife is an artist and uses the images for refference, so jpg files are fine for her.

Actually, quite decent for the price ...and the low weight is a big plus. I normally use the 28 - 135 IS which is heavier.

Yes, I have had mine just over three weeks now and fall colors are just about full bloom so looking forward to more rewarding use.

Jpeg is supported with several levels of compression. No raw files are required. You can also set the camera to be more or less agressive about things like sharpening and contrast.

The kit lens is decent once stopped down to around F8. Wide open I consider it a train wreck (CA is terrible wide open). Still in practice, I find it very usable.

They were taken with the EF-S 18-55 kit lens as well as a 70-200 F4L.

Yep on both counts. JPG only and the lens is a definite yep.

You're making a mistake, though. Forget about getting just one of the Rebel D's. Your wife defintely won't let you use it once she has her hands on it and you won't want to use anything else once you give it a try.

Looking a the price it's a perfectly nice lens, since the camera is new to
me I used it during 95% of all my pics...

Take a look at my first test:
