New MOD in town: This is going to take a while

Yeah, that post was a long time ago. It's a wonder if people will change or not.

Frank, do a search on this forum. I do remember people believing that. Maybe some people on this forum who read this, will be brave enough to admit that that is how they feel. Check out the thread that Scott just presented. It's late for me now as I get ready for work tomorrow and I don't have time to research. I'll hear from you all later.

If I don't respond tomorrow, it's because I'm busy hosting my own weekly thread that I start on Mondays...plus other things too.

Just out of interests sake I wonder if a moderator’s thread has ever been locked if it got out of control. 😇😇😇😇
Well, that's got to tell you about the kind of moderation you can expect from me. I'm a very easy going person, but people tend to underestimate my ability to manage things in a friendly and open manner and tag me as the ogre moderator that I'm far from being. Some others try to play my soft side, trying to mold me to their agenda, but I'm also not stupid.

I told you earlier in this thread. You can count on me to make this a much better place than it has been in the past.
Yup. We have an abundance of evangelists and reformers. Enjoy the ride.

:-D

Isn’t going to “a much better place” a euphemism for death and the afterlife? .:-)

It's also contrary to Wikipedia's definition.
LOL Life according to wikipedia site .........the writers selfie

The term is endeared by those that wish to belong to a mob, a clan, its about identity and sharing similar goals with others.

Its more about process and activity than the results.... Hey lets go out and shoot some street stuff and off they go with grins on their faces freewheeling in the streets interacting and having a great time.

Others just don’t get it so they complain
Its more about process and activity than the results

Uhm. yep :)

I think we should defer to the poet considered the spiritual father of street photography (particularly the first stanza):

Recueillement

Sois sage, ô ma Douleur, et tiens-toi plus tranquille.
Tu réclamais le Soir; il descend; le voici:
Une atmosphère obscure enveloppe la ville,
Aux uns portant la paix, aux autres le souci.

--but the rest is so beautiful...

Pendant que des mortels la multitude vile,
Sous le fouet du Plaisir, ce bourreau sans merci,
Va cueillir des remords dans la fête servile,
Ma Douleur, donne-moi la main; viens par ici,

Loin d'eux. Vois se pencher les défuntes Années,
Sur les balcons du ciel, en robes surannées;
Surgir du fond des eaux le Regret souriant;

Le soleil moribond s'endormir sous une arche,
Et, comme un long linceul traînant à l'Orient,
Entends, ma chère, entends la douce Nuit qui marche.

— Charles Baudelaire

I don't know why it's so important to some photographers that they be called "street photographers". But we do know that if some "street photographers" insist that the pictures be taken on or adjacent to the streets, it does limit the types of photos. It's also contrary to Wikipedia's definition.
In my experience, no one really cares what they are called.

Street Photography has nothing to do with ‘streets” - it’s more about the way a photographer sees in public spaces.

But that doesn't change the difference of opinion of what is "street photography" by everyone and the arguments that we have found on this forum for a very long time. I didn't want to discuss "what is street photography", but only to point out that in the past that had become problems for some people. That's great you are more open to it.

As I’ve said, it’s difficult to define. But it certainly has little to do with whether a street is involved or not; most people who are familiar with the genre will know the difference between street and documentary photography. Others will remain confused. C’est la vie.

I'm a little curious. If I showed pictures of people sliding and running down sand dunes in Oregon, taken with a long telephoto lens and asked if this was "street photography", then do you think everyone would say yes? They capture great expressions, don't have distracting elements and everything is in focus. What if we started showing pictures of people on canoes, rubber rafts, or surfboards? Then everyone would be happy with that also as being called "street photography"? It's more than the name itself. It's the name of this forum and the perception of what is included or not.

Forum Rules:
  1. Posts discussing moderator actions are not allowed and will be deleted.
Are you saying that the First Amendment to the United States Constitution will be overruled?
I didn’t say it - this is a DPR Forum rule! I don’t think it’s illegal to post it.
Do you think that, hence the DPR server is on the US of A territory that any restriction of the freedom of speech that contravenes the first amendment of the US constitution would be illegal?
There seems to be some misunderstanding in relation to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prevents the government from making laws which respect an establishment of religion, prohibit the free exercise of religion, or abridge the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the right to peaceably assemble, or the right to petition the government for redress of grievances.

It means that THE GOVERNMENT can not curtail your right to say what you want in public... it does not apply in private. If you walk into a bar and start shouting racist abuse no one has to listen and the owner can kick you out.

Likewise in a privately owned web forum (regardless of where the servers are located) you have no right to free speech, other than that granted by the owner of the forum. Nothing the forum owners decide in relation to what you can/can not post curtails your right to freedom of speech because you don't have any such right.
