Nikon, Nikon, Nikon

This is my experience with this very hostile company especially their customer service. I lived a few years outside the US, and while abroad i bought a Nikon F5. That was in 1996, when the camera was almost $2,300 and almost 2,800 here in the US (because of the complete price gouging that Nikon USA has). The camera had about 80-100 rolls of film and guess what this is only about 3000 frames. They rate this mediocre camera at well above 150,000 $#$#@. Yeah sure it is. On my last roll of film, i found that the shutter is stuck. Cost to repair is almost $ 500 which is absurd because the camera has not had that much wear on it and apparently it has a defective shutter that completely failed after only 80 rolls of film. They would not repair it because it is considered gray market, although i dont think that i would have bought a NIKON USA when I was in the Emirates. I tried to explain but they aer absolutely hostile towards customer or are even willing to pay. This crappy attitude that they have will make me sell my D100, (Nikon USA), all lenses and that doomed F5 on ebay and go look somewhere else. I am using my 15 year minolta for now and it is going strong (8000i which was less than 1/5 of the price of a crappy f5)

Nikon is about price gouging and bad customer service. The want to make extra bucks by selling USA stuff, instead of keeping a log of all the serial numbers of cameras and lenses that they purchased they need to be looking at improving their pathetic customer service. They sell overpriced lenses that don't work properly for example their 70-200 VR ($ 1,800 - absolutely no good reason for such inflated prices). If you can afford a 2000 dollar digital camera then sure you can afford 1800 . What a Philosophy.

I will either switch to canon or wait for minolta to release a decent SLR that i can use my old lenses on.

Let this be your last post here. Nikon doesn't deserve such a valuable poster as you on a Nikon dedicated forum. Please watch the door on your way out.

That's why you cant even sleep anymore at night?

Stop trolling and bashing on this forum. After all you're not doomed to remain Nikon, if you're not happy then switch, but do it quickly and spare us the details. Thank you!

Nothing offensive. I was just confused by what you said. Does this forum sponsored by Nikon? (I really don't know) I thought this Nikon Forum is for people to express their opinions or seeking help for Nikon products.

I am a user of Nikon pro equip. for the past 20 years. I switched to Canon 1Ds bec I wasn't happy with various things about the 1Dx. I was hoping that Nikon would bring out a replacement sooner but they didn't. I have used the 1Ds for 6 months now and I find it a good camera and a very serious one. I still want to give Nikon a chance bec I love their lenses but I knew there would be a long wait and I couldn't afford to wait it out.

I haven't been dissappointed but I think in general there is a burning need for digital pro SLR's to get their act together with a real good WB system manual and auto as well as a F5 SB26 or SB 80 like fill flash combination. It is so hard to use digital SLR's at weddings using either the original flash or even a handlemount flash. The systems just don't behave like auto flash but more like manual. I am happy with an 11 Mp resolution so that not such an issue and you know what FF is also not a terrible loss (at least in my profession). So I am watching to see who will correct those main shortcomings-and with the rate Nikon is going I can almost feel a 2Ds coming out faster with those corrections then any kind of Nikon!

It bother's me as I feel Nikon has let us down. They had the best exposure and flash exposure going for them all these years and they just haven't bust at the seams with exertion towards that effort for us there faithful followers!
NIKON should say something NOW !!!

I wouldn't go running to buy a Canon 1DS. I am selling mine right
now after giving them an open-minded opportunity to earn all my
business. I am a Nikon photog at heart and I must say, after using
the 1DS for a couple of months, Nikon's are better systems (IMO).
Even though they got some things right, there were more cons than
pros...by far. So I am waiting and I know they will deliver as
they did with the D2H...just later than I would have liked. So if
any of you want to switch now, check out my ebay auction, item

Why they are in trouble? Ha......look at the quality sllek looks of all the compacts Canon has to offer (even Sony) and look at the neat and cheap DSLR's Canon is making and then look at the Nikon offerings. Real limp!

Hey your not being fair. I have had no real trouble with my very heavily used F5 (more then one would have with anything used as hard). I bought a Canon EOS 3 when it first came out and I had to return it due to a real odd problem after a day (it shread the film as the film went through the camera!) I used to live in Europe and so when I did need Nikon repair here all I did was explain it to the customer service people who very fairly asked me to provide a bill of purchase oversea's. Which i did, It was repaired without problem. So I can understand you being upset but I have dealt in the past with Nikon in Belgium and it was a very good experience and the same can be said for their service center in NY and Calif.

In 1999 when Nikon released the D1x (or there abouts) they also released the D1h at about the same time frame. So, it is reasonable to assume that Nikon will release a "D2x" shortly.

However, Nikon has a partnership with Fuji and Kodak. So, who knows what kind of wherefores & whereas'es they've got written up between the three. Perhaps the fine print between these three says that Nikon cannot release a high rez camera till the end of 2003....and perhaps Nikon can release a PJ high speed camera now, since Fuji & Kodak aren't presently producing/marketing one. Nikon IMO is a company that can stand on their own two feet, however, they must be making a good buck with its Fudak partnership...so Nikon would not want to do anything stupid to break this partnership.

Brian is right. Everyone should be allowed to express an opinion even if it hurts our loyalists sentimentalities. Sometimes I think that the people who get so darned hot headed must be married into a CEO of either Canon or Nikon's reigning families! While I am airing out my grievence, I REALLY think the term TROLL should be outllawed on this entire site. It's an ugly term to use and all it does it show the extreme immaturity (and narrow mindedness!) of those who use it. This should not be a mud slinging web site, but rather a serious web site for the persuit of knowledge concerning all that's digital.

It becomes increasing tedious to read through forums where everyone is pouncing on every one else's back.

Actually, I speak American, which many in the world claim isn't English anyway :-).

My bad for not looking for the English link on the site, thanks for passing it along. I do see the imaging bits up 200%, which doesn't seem like the end of the world to me, but I couldn't find the part that talks about changing all the management on October 1st. Can someone please point my blind eyes to that information? I also notice that the link you provide shows this report as of May 27, 2003.

Thanks for the pointer, Iliah, much appreciated.
I guess it is just that I don't speak Japanese, but what the heck
are you talking about?
And some do not speak English :)), but it seems as nothing new.

The only fact I see you're trolling again on this forum. You were several times asked politely to leave for any of the Canon forums suits you but it seems you need to be reported, not convinced.
