I have a Lumix GX85 and I am tempted by the GX9 (if only so I don't keep touching the screen with my nose when using the EVF!) but it's hard to find in Perth Australia.

Has the GX9 been discontinued? I wonder if I should make the leap to the G95 is there, much to be gained going to the G95 and sacrificing the portability I have with the GX85?

This site says the GX9 is discontinued.

I would find it hard o think that the GX9 has been shelved by Panasonic - it has hardly been around long enough to be updated, nor is their a new sensor to make the update.

It is a bit down-spec compared to the G9 - therefore it could do with a bit f a lift. I am not all that happy with the way they fiddled with the design of the on/off switch and mode dial to squeeze the mechanical EV wheel in.

Nor have I heard any rumours of slow sales.

Maybe Ted’s are not continuing to carry stocks of that model?

The GX9 is still shown on the Panasonic Australia website so I don't think it's been discontinued.

Regarding handling, the GX85 and GX9 are quite similar so if you're shooting left-eyed and your nose is touching the screen, the GX9 will be much the same. However the GX9 EVF can be tilted up which may help.

I've not heard that the GX9 hasn't been discontinued. That of course, means absolutely nothing. I love mine. I'm right eyed so.. Design is overall very similar to the GX80/85 so except for the tilting EVF I don't see how it'll improve screen smearing. I'm really happy with mine as a travel/street type camera. To me the G95 is probably a better all around, but for a lot of my use I prefer the smaller size, lighter weight of the GX9. It's also really inconspicuous. If the larger size and weight of the G95 aren't issues, it's likely a better choice.

Me too...
...so I don't keep touching the screen with my nose...
Drove me nuts on my first outing however you can turn off the focus point aspect of the screen which was what was killing me. I can now happily use the EVF with my dominant left eye.

This sounds like an acute case of G A S. What is it with the GX85 that’s going to improve your photography, or enjoyment using the camera? I’d suggest if you’re not satisfied with the GX85, you’re not going to find much more satisfaction with the GX9.

Re nose: Turn off touch screen. Set function button to turn it back on. Use it when you need it. Like moving the focus point. Anything else is simpler, easier and quicker using buttons.

I doubt it's discontinued. Adorama was out of stock at least twice in the last few months.

I think the GX series does well for Panasonic, aside from the GX8.

Then again, if it is Discontinued, that means a GX7 MkIV is around the corner.

Hi.. I have/had both.. What do you expect to improve from GX85->GX9? For me, after having GX85+GX9, now I use 2 GX9s.. It's visibly improvement and enjoyment from my experience.. But people have different requirements.. In short, GX9 gives me more resolution, better JPEG color, better screen, better menu, many newer functions (minimum shutter speed, video IS lock, ISO in M mode etc..), MF level, EC dial, and many more here and there..

G95 has big handling difference than GX series, but image is suppose to be the same, in theory, but some users report different color/noise output than G9/GX9.. G95 has more video function and usability than GX..

For touchscreen, you can turn off in the middle right tap on the screen

The GX9 12-60 kit is still available on the Panasonic Canada website and in-stock at most retailers. Having said that, I had a GX9 and returned it within one day. I just couldn't tolerate the EVF.

OP mentioned his nose touching the touch screen. GX9 has tilting EVF which could eliminate that problem while still allowing use of the touch screen.

That's a great question. I agree with almost all of the above posts. For the cost of a GX9 you could look into the G9 and get more bang for the buck. Nevertheless, G85 or G9 will give you larger more comfortable EVF, and the Lumix G9 has a custom toggle stitch on the front of the body which I use to turn off and on the TouchScreen AF mode. Works great for nose clearance issues.

Thanks Tom. I thought it was odd given it's a relatively new release.

It doesn't seem to be a popular model here, most of the main retailers don't seem to stock it. Even the G95 is listed as either backorder or preorder in most stores.

I need to do some more research into the differences in the two models but is there anything that stands out in your mind?

I don't think I suffer GAS, my camera and lens kit is pretty modest - 1 body and 4 lenses.

Things that attract me to the GX9 are the tilting EFV, better jpg colour (I shoot mostly jpg), slightly better resolution.

I saw one at Digidirect in Cannington a few weeks ago. They're listed on their website as well:

Their prices are competitive.

I've read a lot of people disappointed by the EVF. Is it a downgrade from the GX85?
Not necessarily. It just depends on how sensitive your eyes are to sequential field scan. My eyes apparently are super sensitive to it, so it's a no go. For other people, it's not an issue at all.

Or just disable the Touch Pad AF and keep Touch AF + Touch LCD alive?

I love the tilting evf of GX1 (which is not auto switching) and GX7. However IMHO it is great for waist level or low angle shooting only without the need to bend my body.

For normal angle of shooting, it is still better to reset the evf to its normal position.

To avoid nose focusing having Touch Pad AF disable is still the easiest solution I think.
