Sony Announces a9 II with Voice Memo, Two UHS-II SD Slots, Improved Dust & Moisture Resistance

Sony a9 II ($4,498 – shipping November 2019) features voice memo, two UHS-II SD card slots, improved dust & moisture resistance, improved control button ergonomics, a7R IV grip design, USB-C connection and new low-vibration 10 FPS mechanical shutter.

I am shocked and very disappointed with Sony presently.

To sell my A9 for $2,500 which is probably going to be less than that now and cough up another two grand ($3,000 w/tax) for this?

Not me but what really has left me depressed is that we are most likely going to have to wait another 18 to 24 months to get what we thought the A9 II would be which is 36mp and even better AF.

Pricing the same sensor and AF system at $4,500 is just flat too high the camera should be $3,595 all it is a new model with several little things none of which are that big a deal to me. Sure dual II slots, better grip, 10FPS mechanical, improved dust sealing are welcomed but that is what you do when you release the new models but no game changer or wow factor at all.

Sony has really dropped the ball lately with recent camera bodies except the IV and the release of so many great lenses in the last year.

The RX100VII with the slow lens and to date with no option for the faster 1.8 like the Via is a real miss and mine is going back. Every shot I have taken with my V & II side by side has double the ISO on the VII and the images are not as sharp. Mine is so bad on half the shots it may even be defective.

a6600 I cancelled my preorder I am not a vlogger and its the same sensor that is in the four-year old a6300.

Now this same sensor again no improvement in AF which admittedly is the best on the market right now but the A9 already has both of these???

Whats next a RX1R with the same 42mp sensor in the A7rII?

Sony rocked the world with sensors and AF and this camera is not an upgrade and like I said in the beginning we have to wait a long time now to get an upgraded A9. Obviously they are unable to do a 30 or 36mp at this time because they cannot possibly be so stupid to release the A9II if they had them or will have them in time for the Olympics.

Yep, Sony bought themselves another 18-36 months with this version. I'd call it an upgrade but not sure these tweaks constitute an upgrade. Voice Memo, pahleese!

As posted this makes not moving to version 2 pretty much a no brainer for most of us. Now we can save up for the soon to be released 500 f4 🤡

... but they have certainly accomplished that. So I just saved the $5,000 I had planned on spending!

They should have borrowed from Nikon and called it the A9s (S, as Nikon shooters know, is for same).

This is the most disappointing Sony release since, well, the last one - the a6600.

I'm hoping there's really a Sony A9rii or an A10 coming before the olympics. If not, it's going to be a Canon and Nikon show, as usual.
Agreed!

Unless they came up with a way to keep the sensor dust minimized (didn't see much info about that in the press release), the rest of these features won't be all that valuable to those who change lenses often.

So it will probably be a Canonikon Olympics....again.

This from Jared...

He makes sense. Depend on what is your task and wait to see detail reviews. I am sure some sport PJs find the incremental improvements well worth. 10fps mechanical shutter likely also works better with flash and further less subject to LED banding.
Yes and if I didn’t already own an A9 it would make sense. But as it stands I’ll instead be waiting for an A9iii ;)
Here, here! There, there! Where, where? 😂

It is really too bad for me as I just received my Sony FE 100-400mm GM and was hoping that I could snag the A9 (original) at a good price even slightly used, but now I don't think anyone will be to eager to upgrade.

There will be fewer for sure... but there are also those to whom money is no issue and they must always be toting the latest kit.

But the brand new A9’s will likely drop again in price too as they sell them off.

Not in a hurry, so I will wait and see what happens. Maybe around Christmas time the prices will go down.

Aren't those pro high speed cameras low res anyway?
Data transfer speed is the bottleneck... so if you want super fast shooting you must sacrifice a few megapixels.

At least until some even faster processors come along which of course is inevitable.

(And not that I’ve ever had a problem with 24MP personally).

My $5000 will be spent instead for travel to locations where I can take stupendous photos with my A9. Cash better spent I think.

And that makes no difference at all - 24 MP is plenty for the final images (printed in newspapers, magazines or distributed in digital media - no huuuuge museum prints).

For anyone transferring images from events slow transfer is terribly nerving so pro photographers will most likely see this as a huge upgrade.

Future technology is never found in todays cameras...
(And not that I’ve ever had a problem with 24MP personally).
In the same boat, 24 MP is plenty even for stormy weather... ;-)

Do you think slowing down file transfers has anything to do with not using the 32mp sensor they already have?

But then the phantom Zeiss ZX1 has 47mp and is supposed to be able to do this are they doing it the same way? Or rather was Zeiss talking about doing it the same way?

A camera company did not make the toy I want. Call the Whaaambulance.

What Sony really needs to do, is give us a decent firmware update for the A99 ii.

I believe what is lacking is higher processor speed that sips battery power. There are plenty of very powerful processors but you’ll need a fan and huge battery in the camera. Sony is also about size and weight.

I'm just here to read the "coulda, woulda, and shoulda" comments!!! It's just announced, not real world tested! Who cares if it's "only" 24mps and not 36? That was just a rumor!
Yup! Many times RUMOR = GUESS

Two recent fails by Sony, vastly outshadowed by the many awesome lenses, but fails nevertheless-

1. Wildlife/bierders asked vehemently for a mini-a9. What did we get? More

a6xxx rangefinders.

2. a9ii with 36mpx for cropability. What did we get another sports/get it to the press box

centered body.

Sony must make way way more money selling to pro sports shooters than amateur hobbyist shooting wildlife :( That or the mentality of the Betamax spectre still haunts them.

Also have to agree with the other thread about what happens when there is no competition. Maybe this will give the time gap CaNikon needs to get close.

I can for sure see the updates being welcomed by the pro shooters, but this rumor sites have to feel kinda stupid now when referring to Sources who meant the A9ii in short would be "revolution" and all the chatter about the 30/36MP sensor.

I`m looking forward to seeing the hands on reviews and the impressions of the photographers who are used to using the A9 mki, seeing the difference in AF performance would be interesting. Maybe they have implemented more AI in the AF like tracking AI as the Olympus X.

if the update is basically connectivity, ergonomics, og sealing a lot of us non-pro MK1 users will keep our MK1 until the next evolution or "revolution" will be announced.

Who cares if it's "only" 24mps and not 36?
Usually with a new model, things are improved. Like resolution for example. Crazy concept, I know.
Yeah its crazy that Apple hasnt improved the Iphones primary camera at all for 6 years. The primary camera on the Iphone 6S, 7, 8, X, XS, 11 are all 12MP. As you know, MP, is the only way to improve a camera.

They've improved the sensor mate. Same can't be said for this camera.
