Hi-Touch dye sub vs inkjet- quality? an Cost $$$

Does anyone have experience with these printers and what comparison
can you make with current quality inkjets?
Inkjets have come a long way but they still don't put down a
protective layer like the dye subs :)
I own the 630PL and the prints are very nice indeed but to me it
has one failing and that concerns dust. I have a terrible time
trying to keep dust out of this printer and lots of my photos are
effected by it. A single spec of dust on the paper or the thermal
print head can ruin a print. Apparently there are specific cleaning
kits for the Hi-Ti's but I've not seen them in Australia.
Vanbar will have stock soon. [email protected]

What a fantastic little printer. I am using the 640PS as a stand-alone.
Just copy edited jpeg files to compact flash and plug it in the printer.

I compared a jpeg file that I had earlier printed at a local Wal-mart on Frontier w/Fuji film paper. The HiTi 640ps 4 x 6 prints look better and I have total control.

Glad you're happy! It's really a nice set-up with great output.

Hi Wirak,

Is it possible for you to send us this test image of yours so that we may better see the faint banding that you mention? please send it to the: [email protected] address if you have time. We're always looking to improve the quality of our prints to even the most discerning eyes. Thanks.

A bigger printer (6x8, 5x7, 4x6) is on its way. Slated for release sometime during the first quarter of 2004.

Just wanted to post a follow-up to the forum. Paul was kind enough
to print me a sample from his 640PL (I believe). I selected an
image, preprocessed it in Photoshop, and used Qimage to print to
file at the native HiTi resolution.

The result is greatly superior to the sample print I requested from
HiTi's website. Colors and detail are great, with the only flaw
being faint banding that's only visible upon close inspection.
I've got picky eyes -- I couldn't stand the Canon S-series because
of the fixed dot pattern that resulted in "banding," so close
inspection to me means under 6". I'd say that 95% of people
wouldn't be able to tell it's not wet process just by looking at
it. And being among the 5% that could tell, it's still nice enough
that I wouldn't care that it wasn't wet process! =)

I've only got two other gripes about it (besides the banding).
First is the thin paper, which doesn't have quite the weight of
true photo paper, but I've noticed that's common to all the
dye-subs. The other is the limited print size of the HiTi, so I'm
also looking at the Olympus. But since the Oly is lower
resolution, I'm concerned it won't be as detailed. Anyone with
more insight into this matter? (Or anyone with an Oly willing to
print me a sample??? =)

Final words: thanks Paul.
