Hi team

I'm hedging my bets on the above.

Fairly new to Nikon.

I gather there are a few iterations of this model. The later the better ?

Performance at the 70 200 is pretty good allegedly.

So how bad does it get to 300?

What's centre sharpness like through the range?

Nikon has three different 70-300mm VR lenses. Which one are you asking about?

AF P 70 300 VR, latest version
It is Sharp throughout and iq is excellent. Af is instantaneous. It is easily the best 70-300 in it's class.

Sounds like a genuine all rounder...

I'm not sure whether the 70-300 f/4.5-6.3 DX version is earlier or later than the 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 FX - or even if they were launched together - but the FX is more of an "all rounder" than the DX version. More expensive, bigger and heavier though.

Some centre sharpness for you to consider...

I have both. The Dx is lighter (more plastic), cheaper and iq is still excellent as is af speed. The Fx is better built, heavier, twice the price and has a VR switch.

As this is the Fx forum I guess you'd want the Fx version anyway.

Yes, I had overlooked the forum we're in, and OP would indeed probably be more interested in the FX version.

I only have the DX version, but I've been playing around with it on my D750 with a Kenko x1.4 teleconverter. That means max aperture at the long end is nearly f/9, but the AF still works in decent light. I haven't had the TC long enough to properly investigate what it does to the IQ, but at £65 used on ebay it was cheaper than adding an FX lens.....

DX version with x1.4 teleconverter. The exif doesn't show the effect of the TC on focal length or aperture.
