I placed an order for 17-40L ($799 - 10%=720 including shipping).

She told me that they are expecting shipment for 70-200L on 13th Oct and hopefully we receive it by after 15th.

Just wanted to update.

I bet the deal is just like the 10D's. Dell is selling the cameras and letting someone else in another state drop ship them. This is probably the story with the lenses too. The supplier is expecting a shipment of lenses on the 13th. Dell doesn't really know if they will come, if the type of lens you want is included in the shipment, or how many of the lenses if any Dell will be allotted.

A sincere "good luck" to everyone who deals with Dell on camera gear. Quite honestly you will need it. No reason to believe anything anyone at Dell tells you or anything that shows at their status site. Only when you have a piece of equipment in your hand can you believe you will get it from Dell.

Check out their rating at resellerratings.com and note that it is still heading downwards last time I looked. Dell is down there with all the other fly by night companies because of the practices they have adopted.

If you can find another dealer where I could have ordered the 70-200 2.8L IS for $1,169.10, let me know. I expect mne to be shipped next week. If it's not for another month or two, it's still worth the wait. Several people reported on another thread that they received theirs yesterday.

On Tuesday Brenda gave me an estimated ship date of 11/18 and then she e-mailed me back on Wednesday to tell me it looks like it will be around 10/13. She seems like a very good person to work with and I believe she's doing the best she can to get the best information she can.

Several places to price shop and get ratings at the same time, I'm not going to do your price shopping for you. However, you can go to E-Bay and find folks promising pretty much whatever you want at any price you want to pay, they don't produce either. Sounds like you are loyal to your Dell representative. Good Luck! When my deal went bad they told me that mine had never worked in that department and nobody working for Dell would ever have said what she told me. A call a few weeks later to the same extension went to a totally different department. The only time that Dell gave me a chance to talk to a human being without jumping through hoops was when they wanted orders canceled because they severely oversold something, then they set up a direct line to handle that!

I wished all who deal with Dell good luck. I still mean that. If it works this time you will get burned another time. They are down there with all the other bottom dwellers now despite the once reputable name.

As for your ability to wait, I said the same thing. However after being lied to repeatedly and often deliberately, I had enough fun. Did you know that Dell has multiple queues and that they don't ship equipment in the sequence orders are received? Two separate contacts at Dell told me this.

Enjoy your dealings with Dell, I once sold dozens of their computers and I won't put my reputation on the line to sell a cable from Dell now. Dell has changed, their reputation still survives in some circles.

I did a little research for you. Dell's six month resellerratings rating is a 3.36, still trending downwards rapidly. I think they are two points down from last Spring if I remember correctly. The average rating for a company there is 8.43.

Order 10D on Oct 2rd, received in hand Oct 8th.
Got mine promptly too, from PCMall through my NAPP membership. That was after being yanked around by Dell for three months though with people who ordered after I did receiving cameras. Dell screwed up their marketing and then just didn't ship the product. As I noted in another post, Dell has a resellerratings ranking of 3.36, that is right down there with all the other bottom dwellers and about two points down from where they were six months ago if I am not mistaken.

Dealing with Dell is a lot like dealing with junk bonds. You are sure to get burned sooner or later.

Hu

Hu, you sure seem bitter.

I'm quite familiar with eBay and don't see anyone offering the 70-200 f2.8L IS for anything near the price I ordered mine at.

I ordered from a "team leader" and she's been around for a while, I would guess. She even provided a print screen shot of their order system (I printed it out before Rob wiped out all the info out of fear she'd get canned).

I bought a notebook from Dell almost two years ago and will probably buy my next workstation from them as well.

resellerratings is useful but is also skewed by the large number of folks that just want to hammer on the BIG BAD DELL. How many satisfied customers bother to go their to report? Most don't even know about resellerratings but they're going to Dell to begin with because they figure they're a well-established company.

I'm not a loyal Dell fan though it may sound like it. I still remember their lousy entry into the notebook market something like 8-10 years ago (I was a burned stockholder at the time).

Yes, it's commen knowledge that Ingram Micro is shiipping the lenses out. I guess you haven't been following this too closely. Don't bother doing anyone a favor by searching price engines, you will not find a better legit deal on the planet.

What's the problem with Dell being a front man? If they make sure the companies they use to drop ship us stuff is up to their standards, why should we fault them for brokering the deal for us. I know about 4 personal friends who have bought digital cams from Dell before, they seem to always meet or beat their expected ship dates. And, they always had the best rate at the time. I purchased a 10d from them and haven't received it yet. But they were up front in telling me its back ordered and delayed. It was my choice to accept that fact.

Thanks. I'll need the luck. It's hard to sit and wait for delivery.

There are many products Dell sells but doesn't manufacture. Cameras is one of them that happens to be in high demand. Others not in high demand show up at your door as promised.

I'm sure not every employee of theirs are gold star employees. When you find one though, you stick with that salesman. My salesman recognizes me and even asked to learn how to pronounce my name.

I'm not always loyal to Dell. They just had the best deal at the time.

Dell is like most other places. Some people will have problems, others do not. I have used them for my 10D and a few other times and had not problem.

I got a 17-40 for $699 + shipping from OneCall. Their regular price is $799 but they had a special price that I had to get by e-mail

Hu, you sure seem bitter.
Yes, that is because I am. Not only did I get jerked around but the last former client I sent to Dell was burned on warranty also. The events were overlapping so neither of us had adequate warning. No question that I bash Dell without hesitation now. That is because I was lied to repeatedly and caught them selling out of sequence and playing a few other games. After all the people I steered to Dell I also feel it is almost my duty to steer people away from them since their business practices have changed so drastically. I hate the thought of the people I no longer have contact with buying from Dell on my past recommendations.

Enough satisfied customers bother to report that the average rating on resellerratings.com is an 8.43. Speaking for myself, I have reported more good companies than bad. I have also hammered a couple that needed hammering. You are right that unhappy customers are far noisier than happy ones but that doesn't explain Dell's rating relative to other companies rated at the same place. The comparative percentages of happy and unhappy customers should be the same for any company. Dell's rating was over a five for the last six months when I checked it after ordering from them. It is now down to a low three. They have been in business for a long time so that is a strong indication that customer angst is growing.

Nothing wrong with drop shipping in itself. Problem is that Dell has very poor communication with their drop shipper and often goes to great effort to conceal that they are drop shipping items.

Every time Ingram Micro was expecting a shipment from Canon that became the new ship date for my 10D. Dell did not actually know if any 10D's were in a particular shipment or if they would get any of them if there were some. However Dell would happily string me along with ship dates and claims that my camera was "in production" and would ship within a couple of days or within 24 hours despite the fact that they didn't produce it. It was often possible to get three different status messages cycling through at the same time.

I finally ran out of patience with Dell when I caught them in blatant lies and shipping cameras out of the sequence cameras were ordered in.

I do wish those of you who deal with Dell good luck. As someone else mentioned, some of you will not have any problems. Even lousy vendors have some happy customers.

I'm talking about the 70-200L IS @ $1169. I'm rather surprised how expensive the 17-40 is at even the best discount chains. It bothered me so, that I went to my local stores who charge between $719 and $729. It's weird to see the discount stores and the full service brick and mortar stores so close. Those Internet dealers are making tons on this no doubt.

Hu,

Relax....everyone knows Dell doesn't have the most robust system.

Dell doesn't have a system when it comes to cameras. I did think that it was reasonable to warn folks. Those that care to heed the warnings can. Those that want to stick their finger in the fire for themselves are welcome to do so. I do think that many are still suckered by the Dell name. It once represented a quality company.

You can rely on any comment I make into a thread concerning Dell being a cautionary note. Please don't feel the need to read them. However others should be allowed to choose also.

Hu,

Let me rephrase from my previous post.

I read your posts thinking that you had something to offer; you didn't.

In UK at the moment on business, but wife said I have a huge box from Dell waiting for me at home. Must be the 2 that I ordered.
I placed an order for 17-40L ($799 - 10%=720 including shipping).

She told me that they are expecting shipment for 70-200L on 13th
Oct and hopefully we receive it by after 15th.

Three months!!! Wow, that's patience. They must have given you quite a good deal to have you stringing along that long. I would have given up way earlier. But, thanks for blazing the trail for us later dudes. Maybe they've worked out some of the "kinks" on such a high demand/low volume camera by now.
