Hi all,

In a just over a month I'm off on a holiday to Malaysia and Thailand. The two week trip will cover KL, Penang and Bangkok. I'll also spend time in Port Dickson and Melaka. Could I ask either the Malaysians among us (or others who have travelled over there) for some photographic advice?

1 - Where in KL is a good place to shoot cityscapes (that include the twin towers and the KL Tower)? And what about Bangkok?

2 - I have seen photos of the Petronas twin towers taken from the top of the needle. I know that people can pay and go up there, but I want to take a night shot of the towers so the question is - Do they allow tripods on the tower?

3 - Do any of you know where I can find sunset times for Malaysia and Thailand?

4 - What would you recommend I visit from a photographical point of view (in both countries) and what is the best time of the day to be there?

5 - I don't have much memory and plan to do a lot of stacking, so pretty soon my 2x128MB sticks will get full. Can I take my sticks to a photo processing shop and pay for the images to be transfered to CDs?

Any other advice?

Thanks a lot in advance

In KL many things of interest, just shoot...:)
Penang...beachsides and city centre
Also in centre of city you can find shopping mall with very small

'computer-shops '...they don;t really sell puters but sell CD's , copied software etc. Ask for more info at the hotel,
I think they can copy your pics to CD too.
In Bangkok, don't miss the temple-complex with the declining Buddha.
Also look around in the evening at Pat Pong ( centre of city ).

Have a nice trip and enjoy these great places.

Hi luben,

I have done some shooting from the very top of the petronas tower. There are however no way to get up there without being invited. However, you can go to the mid part ( the bridge ) by paying a small fee. It's indeed a stunning building and well worth a visit...

In Bankok there are millions of places to shoot from, not to forget the Royal Palace. For a peak shot you could go to the Bayoke Tower 2. I believe it's the highest building ( hotel & apartments ).

Have fun !

From the KL Tower (you called it the needle), my apartment building, the Twin Towers Sky Bridge.

The KL Tower, yes. The Twin Towers sky bridge? Not sure, but probably yes. (There are tours going up to the Sky Bridge but you cannot enter the actual Twin Towers which are for commercial users only.)
3 - Do any of you know where I can find sunset times for Malaysia?
About 7pm, gets dark earlier these days...
4 - What would you recommend I visit from a photographical point of
view and what is the best time of the day to be there?
Putrajaya (the government admin center), Chinatown, the National mosque, Melaka town, National museum, Bukit Bintang (shopping district) as well as those you mentioned.
5 - I don't have much memory and plan to do a lot of stacking, so

Yes, you can get that done. Print processing is pretty reasonable too, at RM0.50 per 4R print or US 13 cents.

In fact, shop around for a back-up device from Apacer called the Disc Steno which backs-up your photos from your mem card into a CD. Looks like a slightly large discman with mem card slots and costs around Malaysian RM900 (US$236). You can back-up one stick while shooting with the other.

WOW :->

Thanks a lot for all the info Tigadee. I had a look at your gallery. You have some good nightshots there. I can't wait to go to Malaysia and take some pics. I don't think I can afford to get the Apacer, but it is great to know that I can get the MSs copied onto CDs in the shops.

Thanks again and all the best

If you like taking pics of people, I suggest you visit the wet markets. I'm from Penang so the large wet market will be Chowrasta Market (off Penang Road). Go early - preferably by 8am. I'm sure you will have a great time taking pics there.

And of course, don't forget to try the great hawker food! :)

You need to know someone who could get you there. I was invited by my wifes brother in law ( He's a highly ranked police officer in K.L )
However, you can go to the mid part ( the bridge ) by paying a

I really don't know but I also don't see why not..Keep in mind though, everything is behind windows and you need to shoot pretty close from the glas to get good angles. It's usually quite hazy in those areas so it can be difficult to get clear shots over the city but you can take several interesting shots from the tower itself.
Thanks for all the info Jens. You have been very helpful.
Good luck and don't forget to share some of your work when you're
back ;-)

Cheers

.... I have seen a gorgeous shot of the twin towers from the KL Tower:

And I can't go all that way without trying to capture something similar to this.

Hi luben,

Some of them were taken from the top floor. Also behind windows but it's certainly an amazing wiev up there. When I get back home I will dig up some shots I took from the top floor and post it...

The ones that look like aerial shots are from the KL Tower, that open to the public.

One or two are from hotels (the one with the swimming pool is the ex-KL Hilton now called Mutiara Hotel) and the rest are from ground level at the KLCC park (next to the twin towers) and some spots not far from the twin towers (across the road or from an open car park, etc.) .

There are also some of Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) with the Courthouses (with the X'mas lights). That's a wonderful place to photograph, day or night.

Hi Luben

Bangkok is an amazing city to shoot. Go to Wat Arun and the Grand Palace for some stunning architecture. Afternoon is best as the light and texture of stone will be at its best. Try and get to the Erawan shrine near the World Trade Centre. It's a tiny little piece of Buddhist worship in the middle of BKK high rises. Thai dancers, music, incense, flowers; early afternoon before the sun goes behind the buildings.

Outside of BKK, a day trip to Ayutthaya to the old capital is fascinating (ask at your hotel), or an overnight trip to Kanchanburi to see the Bridge on the River Kwai, is quite a trip too (I have some pics in my gallery)

Patpong is interesting, but keep an eye on your stuff and NEVER be tempted into the upstairs bars! BKK also has a cool, weekend floating market that will knock you out.

It's easy to get stuff burned onto CD, just ask in your hotel for advice; you'll find them very helpful.

I just got back from BKK and I want to go right back.

Have a great time.
