When I upgraded to the D800, I had my D200 converted to IR and it's served me well in that role.

That said, I've been offered a D7200 (plus 17-55mm f/2.8 lens) at an attractive price. I would have the camera converted to an "Enhanced IR" (665 nm) spec if I decide to go through with the deal.
My questions are:
  • I didn't find the upgrade from 6mp to 10mp to make all that much of a difference for IR stuff. In general, Viewers look at the overall effect rather than nit-picking about fine details. Is the step up to a more modern sensor with higher dynamic range worth it?
  • Can I adjust white balance to get a decent effect out of the camera with the D7200, or must I post process even for "rushes?"
Thanks!

I can't respond much to your question about dynamic range. I think you'll need to find and study some infrared examples on the internet done with a more modern converted camera and decide for yourself.

I converted my old D90 to infrared with the hot mirror at 720nm. Low light performance of its (unconverted) sensor was not its strongest attribute but I was satisfied enough with the dynamic range (DR).

Here's one of my local village pub (which dates from the 9th century). It was a hot summer's day. DR looks OK to my eye.

Here is a street scene in the Czech city of Brno-Bystrc:

Those two examples are unusual for me in that I have not swapped the colour channels but for the vast majority of my infrared images I am so fond of IR faux colours that I tend to do it all the time. That means, in answer to your second question, to me, infrared and extensive and somewhat advanced image postprocessing are concomitant - so, no, you can't expect much straight out of the camera.

However, at your chosen IR pass wavelength of 665nm your images will probably retain a bit more 'normal' colour than mine do at 720nm.

I think you have more research to do!
