Focusing and lag vs Nikon 5700

I'm a recent returnee to photgraphy after a long time away. I recently bought a Nikon Coolpix 5700 and have been very disappointed with the foussing in low light (and focus speed in general) and the shutter lag.

It's bugging me enough that I'm thinking of changing to a canon D10 or D rebel.

Has anyone here had enough experience with the Rebel (or D10 that is on my list) to offer advice as to if I will find a real improvement in these problem areas?

Cheers

focusing problems in inside use and shutter lag turned me off the 5700...I took over 6000 shots with the 5700 and then got the rebel and wow is all I could say...always a fast focus no lag and the rebel has given me a new lease on the joys of shooting again..like the 1st dayall over again..hope this helps...you would not regret your move from the nikon

The dSLRs in general handlle like SLRs. No comparison to the prosumer digicams like the Nikon 5700.

Actually if you were away from photography for a fairly long time, while you were away the SLRs got a whole lot better. These improvements made their way into the dSLRs, so I suspect you'll be pleasantly surprised with the DREB.

The focusing and metering systems on these guys is way beyond what was around before.

What about a nikon D100? A litle bit old some may say, but extremely good, I would choose it before the 10D any time! As a camera they are equal, but the handling, I like the way the nikon SLRs handle, how the buttons are aligned and so on. And yes, I have owned a canon DSLR as well..
Not trying to change your mind, but the D100 can be worth a look.

A real improvement? it is like day and night...

If there is a lag with the 300D...I can't really notice it.

as everybody else said its night & day on focusing and everthing else as i would expect from a dslr vs any prosumer...i'm keeping the 5700 tho because i have gotten some great shots from it and its size with the 8x zoom and i know the limitations of it and know how to work with it..

I see you're zeroing in on your lens. Have you started to think about tripods? ;-)
I have owned and sold many prosumer cameras including the 5700. I
really like the 5700 and it gives you some very nice pictures some
of the best but it can't touch the 300.

I had a 5700 and the same problem like you - low light autofocus. Rebel is much much faster, shutter lag seems to be zero and IF there is no contrast surface and AF can focus (really rare), then you will know it in half a second, not like 5700 trying focusin 3 second and then nothing.

Rebel IS DEFINITELLY a different class.

Even to my 717, the 10D can out-focus it in low light given niether has their assist lamps on. The 5700, my 10D would eat it for lunch. No lag, no focus issues, no low light issues....even in the dimmest lighting.

You'll love it.
