Nikon should be acquired by Apple

I wouldn’t mind Nikon having more Apple-like business models or ideas (products that are easier to use and more stylish, computational photography, devices that communicate with each other easier, better software all around) but it wouldn’t make sense for Apple to buy Nikon.

Let those do what they do best. I have had a few macs and a few iPhones. I like them and they do what I need them to do. The closest I want Apple to my Nikon is making sure any interface required works as it should. Otherwise, STAY AWAY!

The only benefit that I can see is Apple throwing some capital at Nikon. Other than that, I'd really prefer not to own a camera that might end up with proprietary everything from a company that tells all its customer base what it want ands how it wants it.

No thank you!

Apple doesn't have much cash to buy another company. The tariffs is really hurting Apple. The is talk of a government bail out for Apple.
Apple can buy Nikon for pocket change. Apple buy companies for their technology but buying Nikon would be a step backwards.

Had Apple acquired Nikon, this is what they would do to Z6 for example:

Make Z6 slot-less, you'd have to buy 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB version!

With this, you can only transfer photos to Apple's own iCloud, there's no other way. Then you have to download them to your computer from iCloud.

Turning Z6 into a world's first button-less camera with all the controls moving into touchscreen LCD.

And making it much more pocketable by making Z6 flat and gripless, removing EVF in the process.

Making Z6 battery non-removable.

Want more advanced controls? That would be only accessed wirelessly via iPhone screen.

Make Nikon Z lenses buttonless and ringless.

Oh hang on, is that an iPhone? :-D
And the iPhone will end up weighing 2 pounds with a selection button plastered on every exposed surface. :-D

Do you think the stuff on a Nikon is not proprietary? Ever try to fit a Canon lens on a Nikon? Or use a Olympus flash on your Nikon hotshoe?

Bonne FDS.

Apple didn't get to the position it holds by making stupid decisions. Apple stock is in a lot of our pension funds, our mutual funds, etc., whether we know it or not. I don't see how a little company like Nikon would help unless it was purchased with the plan to liquidate it and sell whatever worthwhile assets it has, such as the name recognition.

Companies like Apple buy other companies for their technology or patent or staff or established product line. I do not see that Nikon has any of this that would benefit Apple.

Let's talk after you've read Nikon's annual financial reports instead of camera specs and biased media plugs.

Nah. They’ll just change all the cable connections to some oddball proprietary connectors, invent their own storage media (iCard?) which will only be available from Apple and be very expensive, and you won’t be able to download any photos without first purchasing iCloud memory and uploading them there first.
Don't forget raw files will be proprietary Apple only editable using Apple software.

All would happen is Apple would gut Nikon for their technology and Nikon cameras would be no more. I rather see a Nikon / Cannon merger or even Nikon / Sony merger than Apple acquiring Nikon.

If anyone was going to acquire Nikon, I'd say it should be Samsung. I'm not saying I want this to happen, especially as they already tried the camera game and pulled out despite putting out some good products, but it would make more sense than Apple. Samsung is a direct competitor to Sony in many industries, including TVs, semi-conductors, and imaging sensors. Their smartphone image sensors are on par with Sony, and they continue to innovate, not just copy. In other words, it would give Nikon the opportunity to differentiate their products with potentially superior sensor tech, rather than just riding on the coattails of whatever Sony puts out. And, Samsung could add Nikon's expertise and branding to their Smartphone cameras (like Huawei does with Leica), which would introduce Nikon to a whole new generation.
Avatar77,

Sony produces Nikon's sensors, yes. But, at least for the higher-end sensors, Nikon has a PRETTY strong hand in designing and specifying those sensors. They're not really riding on the coattails of Sony.

Nikon who? Ah yes, now I remember: they're the very inward-looking manufacturer of those famously closed-down products.

They've shrunk to such a degree, I almost forgot who they were!

I don't think anyone, let alone Apple, would want to touch it with a 10 foot pole, lest they become tainted by such a malaise-ridden corporate culture.

Ever so often, you have threads like this, with people hoping an acquisition would be like Hercules diverting the river to clean the stables.

Others beg Nikon to open up:

But Nikon's too busy making earnings headlines to hear customer feedback:
