Want to replace SEL24240 with SEL24105G, but how to handle 105-240?

I love my SEL24240 because of its range. It's the only lens that I carry.

But the IQ of SEL24105G is breathtaking. How can I best get back the range from 105-240 without carrying too much extra? Is there a decent focal length device that works well?

Thanks!

since you only have an A7 mk1, according to your info...

maybe simplest thing for you to do is to buy a A6500 instead of a new lens.

You'd turn the 24-105 into a 35-150, and you'd get some fun new features.. at the same 24MP res :)

plus the A6500 is easier to carry than an additional lens!

same thing applies though. 24MP vs 24MP.

just buy the A6500 :)

I still don't get it. Why do MPs matter above 24 matter? How is it beneficial? I can print a 40x60 print of a 24MP photo.

The crop sensor gives you the effective point of view of that same lens being 35-150, and is still 24mp is the point. The other option would be the 70-300g that someone mentioned or the 70-200 f4 or something

If you had an R, then you would have 42MP, and you can just use crop mode in that to drop down to.. 18mp I think?

in which case, you almost wouldnt need anything new. You could just go with the 24-105, and use crop mode when you want free digital zoom ;)

SEL24240 is not the sharpest lens, you can get much sharper 24-105 and if really needed - crop it.

Go through your photo library, look how useful this 105-240 is. If you use it seldom - just rely on the crop. 24mp is quite a lot of pixels!

If I decided to replace my 24-240 to 24-105G, then most probably I'd have purchased the new E70-350G lens (525 mm FF equivalent, 625 g), and carried the second body for long distance shots. The price difference between FE70-300G and E70-350G is large enough to fit a lightly used A6000 between them.

According to my personal experience, a dedicated telephoto lens 99% of time occupies the shelf in my closet, and carrying it everywhere along with 24-105 is impractical (as the total weight and bulk increase to uncomfortable level, and most photos are still taken in 24-105 mm range). I'd owned the Tamron 70-300 for several years, and during that period I took it to only one major trip, where it was used really extensively (not counting several minor weekend trips, a dozen 300 mm photos per each).

Also 300 mm on full frame is not THAT long, and if you DO need the telephoto for particular shot, very often that'll be not enough. Unfortunately current 70-300G isn't sharp enough to justify its cost on cropped 24 MP body.

i replaced my 24-240 with an RX100 mVI.

Same range (200mm vs 240mm barely makes a difference for landscapes), and to my surprise, images from the RX100 were sharper than my a7rIII with 24-240 !

The 24-240 is quite a nice lens until about 180mm, on the tele it often works good if you handle it well.

Question remains, is the 24-105 satisfying enough and really so much better, since the 24-240 gives also nice results on the lower FL.

There is only a limited choice on the longer Fe FL.

I went for the solution on the shorter segment and accept what's on the market for the longer FL.

There IS a Tamron FE tele F 2.8 coming soon, but it's a bit short.

Ok, so I guess nobody recommends any focal length converters?
Not now. Soon Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 will be released, it's not 105-240, but it should be light and f2.8 instead of f4.
