Climbing the Learning Curve (3 pics)

Nice colours too. That 550ex seems to be providing just the right amount of needed light (how are you playing around with that to get it right?). What 300D Parameter do you shoot in? (you may have mentioned it earlier but I forget).
Greeting Fellow Rebels!

Today I did my first photoshoot with the EF 100mm f 2.8 macro and
the Speedlite 550EX. I got a few keepers and missed quite a few as
well. But I'm learning and that's what is important. There are 33
images in the gallery from today's shoot, if anyone is interested:

wendyo,

Thanks! I'm on that default parameter right now. I do plan to dial this down soon, just have been concentrating on the fundamentals right now. As for post-processing, I ran everything through PS7, some got just a touch of levels, and all were sharpened using USM in full size, then again after resized for web. Most took less than 1 minute. I do the USM to taste, no set formula.

Thanks again,

jim

Justme,

Thanks for the compliment. As for the parameter, I'm still using the default parameter setting. i do plan to tone this down a bit in time, but have been concentrating on the fundamentals right now and have not started experimenting with that yet. What are your thoughts about the parameter settings?

Cheers,

jim

Hi,

Really enjoy your photos.

How much is this macro lens? Is it EF 100mm f 2.8 macro a fix focal
length prime len?

Any other lens that you plan to get?
I am also thinking of going to 300D too but uncertain about the cost

and type of lens that need to buy to take care of portrait, landscape and macro shots that I do.

Thanks in advance

chyeheng,

Thanks for the compliment.

The EF 100mm f 2.8 macro is a fixed, prime lens. I bought mine used (previously loved) for $350.00. It is in mint condition. It is not the USM version. I also got the EF 75-300mm f 4/5.6 IS USM, also used for $350.00. It too is in mint condition. The only other lens I bought is the EF 50mm f 1.8 prime, in addition to the "kit" lens. I'm not sure what my next lens will be, but I'm thinking it will have an "L" designation! LOL!

Sandman,

I think the L is part of the LoL? Sometime just cannot stop thinking that it is
Canon having the LoL :)

Looks like I can only afford at the begining the 1.8 50mm prime len
as my greatest urge for getting the 300D is to have natural light portrait
for my little one. Do you have any sample as sure to demo the DOF of
this prime len on portrait shots?

Thanks, Chye Heng

Being happy doesn't mean everything's perfect. It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfections

chyeheng,

I do not have any samples of this lens, as I have only shot a very few images with it. It is said to be one of the sharpest lenses in the lineup and certainly the most economical. I would suggest you get the "kit" lens too, as it is also a very good lens for the money.

This is an expensive startup, but you will not be wasting any money when you invest in good quality lenses. They have very good resale value too. Also, rather than buying a new cam every year, now you will just buy yourself a new lens. Over time you will have a fine collection that will cover all of your shooting needs.

Very fine work! I am considering this lens too but not sure if I should go for the cheaper Sigma 105 EX.

taking life one frame at a time...

I can't find a butterfly ANWHERE and if I do ever see one they are gone faster than I can get near them. In fact I can't find any decent bugs either. Beautiful shots...

Mr & Mrs. Digital Crazy

I may never really 'get it' but at least I'm trying...

Is the 100mm mostly for Macro shooting then?

i am in AWE !!.. i am a newbie in this stuff. this omnibounce diffuser... it goes over the flash right ???? you didnt bounce this flash pic did you (i feel so stupid.. the ceilings are probably 100 feet up). could the cheaper 420 flash give the same results or did you use FEC ?).
thanks
Martin Eager,

Thanks very much! I used the flash as a direct flash and used the
Stofen Omnibounce Diffuser. I've still got lots to learn with
this setup, but learned a few tricks today that I look forward to
putting into practice on my next shoot.

Thanks again,

WOOOOOHHH!!!!!

Great example of what the 300D is capable of in the right hands!

Thanks for sharing those pics,

stephen rudolph,

Thanks! No bounce, just used the diffuser. I cannot say about the performance of the 420, but the 550 is awesome! As for correct exposures, it was like shooting fish in a barrell!

PC Long,

I thought about the Sigma too and have seen some good shots with it. I might have gone that route, but i got an opportunity to get this one "used" at a reasonable price, so I figured I would go for it. I am not disappointed! If you get the Sigma, I hope you will post some samples.

Cheers,

jim

PS: Have you seen the macro work of Frank Phillips who posts over on the 10D forum? He has a variety of samples of macros taken with varying lenses, including the Sigma. His stuff is first rate!
