I'm looking for software which allows searching for duplicates of a SINGLE PHOTO. I don't want to find all the duplicate photos on my hard drive(s) - I have software which does that. I have thousands of duplicates scattered across multiple drives but I just want to find all the duplicates of a single photo.

Does anyone know of software which can do this?

Best regards,

Lin

There was a software I previously used called Clone Master. Not sure but it should work with Win 10. I am still on Win 7. Tried others but this one allows picking individual files with the contextual menu from Windows Explorer.

Another way is to use something like Scooter Software’s Beyond Compare 4. You didn’t mention if the file names are identical or non identical?

Thanks much - I'll see if I can find Clone Master - actually I want to use it on Win XP. The file names are different or I would just search Windows for the file name, so hopefully the program looks at similar images.

I downloaded and installed Clone Master, but it has no provision for searching for a single file. It's a great duplicate finder, but I already have a couple of those that work well. What I need is to be able to search for a single image and find all instances of it only. Thanks for trying, but I deleted Clone Master because it's another duplicate finder which looks and catalogs all duplicates...

It was about 5 to 6 years since I tried it. My memory is blurred.

The older threads here are 5 to 7 years old which won’t help with HEIC if you have dupe file in that format. I have not looked at this for at least 3 - 5 years. Good luck.

You can try looking at VSDIF, if you are keen.

If you are using Windows, the built-in File Explorer will search for all copies of a given file name across all drives. Just click on"This PC" and type it into the search box. Granted, you may have multiple different images with the same name, but it should narrow it down enough to handle.

Thanks wklee - VSDIF is perfect and allows a single file to be used. I may buy it even though it won't run on my XP system for some unknown reason. I have other systems with Win 7 pro and Win 8.1 and I can always copy the file I'm searching for to another drive connected to one of the systems which the program will run on. It looks like a very good product. The only drive I can't search is the internal C: drive on my XP but I'll use one of the other programs to search that drive.

Hi George,

Thanks! Actually, I'm a programmer so I'm really familiar with the search facilities. The images I'm searching for have various file names. Some are tiff, some jpg and some PNG but all of the same subject so to find them over seven external drives, it has to be a program which searches by visual criterion.

I think I've found a solution with the help of the suggestion of WKLee to try Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder. It won't run on my XP (I just tried it) but I'll use it on a different system and I'll be able to check all my hard disks except the C: drive on the XP which I'll check with one of my other duplicate checking software programs.

Thanks though for the reply and suggestion.

If you're a programmer then you might look up the P-Hash (perceptual hash) algorithm for finding similar images. I put together a program based on that and built on top of a MySQL database. Works very well. I wrote it to cull similar photos but same approach could be used to organize similar images.

Thanks Carey,

That's a good idea! Actually, VSDIF has the feature I was looking for in their Pro version which is reasonably priced. If I had the time I would sure give P-Hash a look, but the ease of having VSDIF to use has solved my issue. Thanks again for the suggestion !!

Time for me to look into it again. I really abandoned my efforts to keep things organized when I stopped photography. Also my PC has slowed down immensely. It is 1 decade old.

The new v7 of VSDIF also now supports HEIC files.

Works really well... there is a free version and a pro version (which I bought years ago). Also in the Windows app strobe. Finds all types of duplicates, including photos. Highly recommended!

Just a heads-up, the free/evaluation VSDIF does not enable single image searches, if I tried it correctly

Jim,

Neither does the paid version unless you buy the Pro or Corporate one.

That's what I thought Lin....$40 min.

Have you tried VisiPics (free/donation) ? Seems to do the job.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the link - I'll check it out. I didn't see anything about being able to search for a single image duplicate, but if that's a feature it's a good one.

Lin

Lin, You might have to put the single image in a folder by itself, and include the batch folder in the similarity search.

Another freeware proggie worth a try for similarity is Nils Maier's SimilarImages 2013.11

It works for me on a single image.

Thanks both to you and WKLee !!!!! :-)

This tool is a killer...I do not know how I have missed it.

Version 8.0.0.1 support also Lightroom and performance and precision is stunning:

https://www.mindgems.com/article/find-similar-and-duplicate-photos-in-adobe-lightroom/

I looked for such tool in the past, but gave up as I did not find anything that produces acceptable results. I tried also the PHASH proposed in this thread, but it has so much false positives that it is more dangerous than useful.

Thank you for sharing...I'm back to deduplication as I have tons of images to remove :-)
