with the excellent quality of 24-70 f4 , I am wondering myself which prime should i get, the 35 f1.8 s or 50 f1.8s for my z6.

I shoot mostly landscape and travel. I will buy the prime portrait lens later anyways, either 85 f1.8 s (or may be the 105 f1.5 G E), and the wide 14-30 & tele zoom 70-200 f4 s in future.

i have the 50 f1.8G before to use with d750 and 16-35 f4 and 70-200 f4 G, it is okie lens , cheap but the focal length for me is not that much use, too narrow for street and too wide for portrait, unless group photo.

may be the 35 f1.8 S work but it will be only useful for low light, and the size and weight is not much of difference from the zoom.

if i would have the 24-70 f2.8 S, I may need neither primes of those focal lengths.

what do you guy get?

Interested in hearing your thoughts as well. Classic question for a lot of us.

Personally I went with 50/1.8 as I needed something more speedy for portraits at an event. Anyway, if that haven’t been the case I would probably have picked 35/1.8 for travel, but as you mention the f4 zoom is great and covers most except when one want to remove the background. 24-70/2.8 seem to be a sweet lens, but maybe not something I would bring along on travels. But at events it would be superb as only lens managing enough blurr and a great working focal range.

I would be happy to own 35/1.8 and 24-70/4 for traveling.

For nature photo I would probably pick 14-30/4, a macro and 70-200 (f2.8 or f4)

Birds...none of the above

Events, 24-70/2.8 would be great. Or 24-70/4 and 50/1.8

Just my thoughts.

wait for the 20mm!

50 1.8 for potential low light situations. 24/70 for cigar smoker on bench 50 1.8 for dancing senior citizen

It sounds like you are leaning towards the 35 f/1.8 S.

I have the 24-70 f/2.8 S lens and I still use the 28mm f/1.8 and 58mm f/1.4 G for low light situations.

An AF-S 105mm f/1.4E if you have the budget for or. An AF-S Micro-Nikkor 105mm f2.8G if you don’t.

Hi

my wishlist is the 35/1,8 and when they archive the 20mm and 85mm 1.8 primes. Hope they will come sooner than expected :)

85mm or 105mm

With My current lens set, including F mount primes, my next prime will be a 20mm or 24mm S. I won't be duplicating my F mounts until I decide to sell my D500, but I also won't be adding F mounts at this time. Just purchased a 14-30, which is really good. That leaves me me with either of those Z primes when they come out or a 70-200 2.8 S, which will make me sell my D.

If you've previously had a 24-70 on some other FX camera, you can go through your library of photos and see what focal lengths you most often shoot and which prime would match up best with that.

Or, if the reason for the prime is the larger aperture, then look at what focal lengths you tend to use in low light or shallow DOF where you'd most appreciate the larger aperture.

Or one of my favorites, the 105 f/2 DC. It's in my bag right now, along with the Z6 and 24-70/4 S.

I would tell you to go for the 35mm.

I had both the 35mm and 50mm, but I kept the 50mm and sold the 35mm.

I got the 35 1.8 to compliment the 24-70 4, have had it about 6 months now. Super sharp and excellent color rendition. It's a great combo with the Z6 for street photography

I got the 50mm to go along with mine it is optically excellent for a bargain price { relatively speaking :-) } . I always enjoy a 50mm lens the 35mm is also appealing but personally I prefer a bit wider . And again speaking for myself I need a macro :-)

That is always a good idea John sometimes you can even surprise yourself just what focal lengths and lenses you use most

For landscape you will find new possibilities with a wider lens, either the native 14-30 or a prime. I am waiting for the "Magic Shift Converter" from Laowa/Venus Optics that will turn my Laowa 12mm F2.8 into a 17mm F4 shift lens. It will also turn my 14mm F2.8 into a 19,6mm F4 shift lens and my 35mm F2 lens into a 49mm F2.8 shift lens. We will see if the magic brushes off at first touch! It only works on Sony-E mount and is sold in a Nikon F and a Canon EF version. Purely mechanical, i.e. no electronic contacts. It needs a Sony-E to Nikon-Z 2mm thick, dumb converter. It needs manual diaphragm control on the lens.

I wonder what the converter will do to my 15mm Sigma Fisheye?

That's exactly what I did last week. After I bought the 24-70 2.8 S, the 35mm 1.8 S was only on the shelf or in the backpack. I will buy due to the magnificent image quality of the zoom at all no fixed focal length in the range 24-70mm for my Z7. All I need is a good native portrait lens (85 or 105), the 70-200 S (2.8 or 4) and a tele for wildlife.

If the 24mm 1.8s is as good as the other S primes, that is what is next for me. Reasonably priced of course.

on my D750 I had 24-70 f2.8, 28 f1.8, 50 f1.8, 85 f1.8 ( and also 70-200 f4 and 300 f4pf.

When I switchted to Z6 + 24-70f4 I sold 50 f1.8, 28f1.8 and 24-70f2.8G . the 50 and 28 was very seldom used on the D750 - the 85 I used more often and It is also working well with FTZ.

the 24-70 f2.8 G i sold because I was much more often using the 24-70 f4.

Now I am also thinking about additional primes or the 24-70f2.8S lens. most probably it will be the 24-70 f2.8S - with the 24-70 f4 I sometimes miss the DOF of the f2.8 and I don't like to switch lenses that often. According to the reviews the f2.8 has near prime-quality - so together with IBIS on the Z6 it could be a very good combination (but expensive)
