Does anyone have an A65 with the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 16-80mm that can share some images?

Spin off from https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4406668 - does anyone have an opinion or own / have used that combo of camera / lens?
I've used the 16-80 on an A65.

I'd recommend newer alternatives like an A68 with the DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM.

The RX series have better sensors than all the APS-C A-mount cameras. The A65 has a particularly poor performing sensor (but 24 MP at 10 fps is pretty cool). If you are happy with the depth-of-field an RX lens offers, an SLT will show more noise when taking the same image. Even at the same relative aperture with much more light/much shallower depth-of-field the A65 won't improve much.

The optical anti-aliasing filter on the A65 does make nicer looking captures from sharp lenses. The RX cameras are known for aliasing.

Thanks- I’m never quite sure if they’re full res though?

Thanks- how will I know if it has the plastic gearing please?

I can't recall the serial numbers to look for, but if you search in the forums on that lens, you may come across the discussion that relates to it. I bought this lens when it was first released and even though I have not had any issues, there are some who have had that problem. So be aware that some are out there with this possible issue. But don't let that frighten you off. Its a terrific lens.

Thanks for the link - some stunning shots. Clearly a capable combo...

What we know is Sony announced new SAL1680Z replacement parts with metal gears in Jan 2011 (Tech Bulletin). Presumeably, lenses manufactured after this date have metal gears.

I don't think we've ever figured out a way to tell the difference between plastic/metal geared SAL1680Zs.

love mine did have to have teh AF gear fixed (want to say cost like 200$) even with me becoming more of an F2.8 snob i have not changed to the 16-50 cause the 16-80 is such a great one lens walkaround option. often tho i find myself hiking with my 70-200 on the body and 11-16 and a macro in my backpack. the Z stays at home.
