I just got my 10D two days ago, and have taken a number of good pictures today, but as I was taking some today, I got these strange blue spots while I tried to take pictures of some tree roots.

These spots only seemed to appear while I was taking pictures of this one tree. Here is a link to the picture, I scaled it down a lot, but the picture was shot in RAW. The shot was using the Program AE mode, with a shutter of 1/30 and aperture of 1.8 with my canon 50 mm f/1.8 lens.

Anybody know what might have caused this? I am a pretty new to this, but so far everything else has come out better than expected, I just had a problem with this one shot.

Actually looks like a reflection of some kind. The sun look like it
is in front. Are other pictures affected?
Yea, other pictures are affected, but just off this particular shot. And yea, this was taken around 5 pm, so the sun was coming at the picture over the hill at a pretty steep angle.

And I thought it may have been a reflection too, but I can't figure out off what.

and did you use a lens hood.? It looks like internal reflections due to maybe a filter or lens issue.

Yea, actually now that I think about it, I think its from the filter. I was using a UV filter, but I had the lens hood on there which requires a liittle ring adapter, and so the filter ends up further from the glass, and I bet that caused an internal reflection of some sort.

Hi zyzzyva100,

This is lens flare and it is most typically caused by using a cheap filter that is not multi-coated.

and cause problems with reflection. Always use a high quality multi coated filter or use none at all. Hoya Pro1 filters seem to work best for me.
