I had many old Nikon lenses including the three f2.8 zooms (17-35/28-70/70-200) since the Kodachrome era, and I also got old. I'm looking for something to reduce weight of my camera bag for the coming photo trip to Inner Mongolia, China, currently considering the 16-80mm f2.8-4 which receives mixed reviews (I'll take the 70-200mm with me though).

Any suggestion would be most appreciated!

My light travel kit is D7200, AF-P 10-20, 16-80 VR E and AF-P 70-300 DX VR. The total weight is 1800 grams.

the 10-20 + 16-80 + 70-300 is a potent light weight set... cant beat that for range and compactness. I am also shooting a D7200, about to switch to a D7500.

I assume you are using it on a DX camera body. The 16-80 is a great lens, but I would not buy it to use on an FX body. All the lenses you list are FX lenses, I think.

I have the 16-80 lens and like it a lot. I have used it for travel and hiking on a D500 and D7200 body, together with the 70-300 AF-P FX lens. (I bought the FX version of the 70-300 AF-P, mostly because I also have FX bodies. There is also a DX version. The FX version has a VR switch, which the DX version does not, which can be useful. The FX version is probably a bit better optically, from what I have read. Thom Hogan has favorable reviews of both versions.) It is a great light weight kit. I also have the 11-16 mm f2.8 Tokina wide DX lens, but it is not light and I have not tried the 10-20.

I am currently moving to a Nikon mirrorless system for travel and hiking (I get full frame and the 24-70 f4 lens for the Z mount is very good and also light). However, I will keep the D500 and 16-80 lens.

I have the 16-80 and really like it on my D7500. I think the general consensus is that it's about the best DX zoom lens you can get for a Nikon. A lot of people do balk at the price, and I admit it is expensive - that may be the source of most of the mixed/negative reviews you see.

The 16-80 tends to be more reasonable in price if bought in a bundle with a DX body, at least when a promotion is offered. I got mine with my D500 body.

What is your current camera ?

I got a D500, that's why buying a 16-80mm DX lens to replace my full frame era 17-35 + 28-70/2.8 seems reasonable.
Agree. It will be a great pair.
