Can The A7iii Do Depth From Defocus Like The Panasonic GX85?

I was reading about the old Panasonic GX85 and it's Depth From Defocus feature that lets you change the focal point of an image AFTER you take the image simply by tapping on its touch screen, with no loss of resolution! That camera came out in 2017 as a budget M43 camera.

Can the Sony A7ii or iii do a similar thing? This is a killer feature. Imagine being able to correct a portrait shot when you didn't focus on the right thing.

As far as I know (and I could be wrong) DFD is simply an Autofocus system that uses information from lens characteristics to aid in contrast detect AF. I am not aware of any post acquisition refocusing with DFD. I believe it's only Canon with their Dual Pixel Raw that allows very slight post focus adjustments.

Yes. Shoot video and pick a frame.

Cameras with good autofocus systems (and competent photographers) don't need such features.

Focus stacking in camera is a nice feature for some types of shooting, and having a good autofocus system doesn't make up for it if you want more in focus than the depth of field you'd otherwise get from a single image. I have cameras with great AF, such as the a6400, but I occasionally use this feature on the G9 because "good auto focus" doesn't increase depth of field. It may be irrelevant for what you shoot, but your statement is simply overlooking that there are instances in which focus stacking is helpful.

I think pre-shoot is a useful feature, and I would like to have it in any of my cameras. I don’t see what’s hard implementing a first in last out buffer overflow procedure, but I’m not an engineer. This way any camera can have pre burst.

If you were to limit it to electronic shutter only, then maybe. Of course, that also limits a lot of other things, like how fast your subject can be moving, and color depth.

If you were to do it in all modes, that could be a lot of extra shutter wear.

Not all cameras have full electronic shutter modes.
