Why cameras like the M are still worth carrying everywhere

any ILC has ever been.

There. Everybody happy now?

perhaps there's more one can do to make the mobile phone image more acceptable (a matter of individual taste here of course):

Fair enough. So, why don't you edit the original and post it here?-- I enjoy learning by example: show me how to do it.

(Hmm, I have the feeling that such a post from you will not be forthcoming....)

You are right. I will not make such a post. 🙂 You can’t get back what is not there. You did a nice attempt. But if I had to choose, I think I would go for the original untouched.

My taste: a higher resolution. ;)

At low res viewing globally i like the back ground better, but the faces..... it looks like it is missing detail even viewing this way.

If your facts are different we could save the peace just by calling it copy to copy variation.

OK, here's one with minimal editing of the original: increase mid-tone contrast and a modicum of color correction.

agreed, poor example. That phone pic only has a color cast and is low contrast. You don’t have much Lightroom abilities if you could not fix that

Thanks for the commentary. The pictures are interesting, you can see that the Canon is better but its not 1000% better.

The reality is that convenience trumps ultimate quality. People that are enthusiasts can talk about this till the cows come home but its not going to matter. The smartphone is good enough and its super convenient.

On top of this nobody wants to pay for another device that does the same thing as the one in their pocket. AND the will have to carry it.
It may be that this is changing. I'm told by the camera store where I deal that phones near killed the point and shoot market, but now phones are building a new market for point and shoots. Especially ones with zoom lens.

The phones, they say, have people taking pictures like never before in history. I've no idea what the actual numbers are, but if 10% of the population had and used cameras before phones, now perhaps 60% of people not only have a 'camera' with them, most use it from time to time. A whole new audience (if that's the right word) interested in taking pictures and within this group an increasing number realize their child is only going to be 800 days old on one day and they understand the photos they're taking of the child, or the cat, aren't all they might be, and they're showing up at the photo store wondering what might be 'better.' Some buy 'better' brag to friends about better, or take a picture of their child, or cat, the friend sees is 'better' and some of those friends find their way to the photo store too.

It will be interesting to see if this remains a fairly small group, at least I assume it's a small group so far, or if it might be a bit of a snowball rolling downhill gathering size as it goes.

I know from personal experience in sharing my photos with friends and neighbors from my M, M3 and now M6 that a couple have bought real cameras for either a trip, or family photos wanting 'better.'

Programs like Lightroom can change color balance and contrast, but cannot create shading and details that were never captured in the first place.
