I've got two older Oly DSLRs, an E-1 and an E-620. The issue is with the E-620 which focus hunts considerably with 14-54mm and 70-300mm lenses. I've tried its 3 focus modes, but it seems to have issues with each. This is odd as the E-1 although not lightning fast, doesn't really hunt.

Are you using live view or the viewfinder? I've never used either of your cameras but I have both an E-420 and an E-520. Both cameras are so slow to focus using live view that it's pretty much useless no matter if I use the kit zoom, the 25mm pancake or the 40-150mm lens. If I use the viewfinder and I have decent light all three of them focus pretty quickly, although the long zoom is a little slower than the others. I also find that they work best if you set it to only use the center autofocus point.

Yes, I've used the central point with the E-620 and phase focusing, and hybrid. I think the E-620 focusing is defective.

I have two E620's. Both focus quite quickly when using the EVF, but, as Gohanx says, in live view both are so slow as to be useless for anything other than leisurely work on a tripod. that is using any lens, but mainly 14-54 mk2 or 14-42 kit lens. It does sound as though you are using Live View with your E620, whereas your E1 doesn't have that option. Try using the EVF with single point focussing. Hope this helps.

I only can tell you about the E-620 in combination with the 70-300mm lens. It is the one lens that hunts the most, especially at the far end of the zoom (300mm). The kit lens 14-42mm is fast in focussing while the lens i use the most, the Sigma 18-50mm, is a tiny bit slower, i always think because its heavier, but does not hunt. As far as i know none of my other lenses hunt. I have no experience with using live view since 99,99% of the time i use the optical viewfinder. As mentioned by others this might be an issue. Otherwise: If you use C-AF with moving objects all my lenses can hunt. What settings do you use?

I added a grip with two batteries and it completely eradicated the focusing issue, even the 70-300 is very fast. No idea it would make such a difference.

I wanted to upgrade the firmware from 1.0 as the upgrade appears to make the 70-300mm work better, but I don't have the cable for the camera and an not sure what kind of USB connector the camera has on it, what the name of it is. Does anyone know what they call that little squarish connector? Thanks.

It's nice to see your problem is solved. Although i've noticed that my E-620 is a tiny bit faster when i use the batterygrip, i've never noticed any difference in the behavior of the lenses. Maybe one of the batteries does not deliver its normal level of power anymore. They are getting old.. Changing the batteries without the grip might give you a clue.
