So I was looking at the prices of Canon, Sony and Nikon mirrorless cameras on digidirect and simply comparing them to the prices on Adrorama, and wex photo.

In Australia (these are converted to USD, and (include 10% GST/VAT)

Z6: $2100, Z7: $3198

A73: $1853, A7r3: $2691

EOSR: 2029, RP:1321

On Adorama the prices are:

Z6:$1796, Z7: $2796

A73: $2000, A7r3: $2798

EOSR: $1999, RP: $1399

In the UK the prices are (wex photo)

Z6:$2467, Z7: $4027

A73: $2337 A7r3: $3508

EOSR: $3052 RP: $1753

I had to double check the UK prices - I assume they include VAT. Why is camera gear so expensive in the UK?

People will mention higher sales tax (VAT), better consumer rights etc. in the UK, but the simple truth is that they charge what they do because they can get away with it.

The price of grey market camera equipment in the UK (with no import tariffs or VAT collected) is roughly the same price as the high street prices of officially imported camera equipment in Australia. That should tell people something.

My figures are definitely not 100% reliable, since I only looked at one store :-)

Your link brings the Z6 down a bit, but the Z7 is still around $1000 more expensive in the UK compared to Australia (which also includes a VAT) and the US. Seems a bit unreasonable to me *shrug*
I'm with you there, Tim. I started a thread about this the other day.
Sorry for the double post. Hopefully the comparison to the Australian prices helps to debunk the excuses about higher prices :)

Yes, thanks for that Tim.

Here's hoping the UK Price changes soon!

With the recent $700 Nikon cashback on Z7 here in Australia along with some other promotions going on I was able to get the Z7 + FTZ + 24-70/4 + 64GB Sony QXD all in a kit (from a local Nikon Australia authorised dealer) for less than the normal body only price - so all up AUD$4499 (approx USD$3150 or < GBP 2450)

Wary of this gray market, especially in UK. What if there's a follow up needed? I looked hard at Cotswold Camera many months back but didn't follow through for this reason.

Are there any importers with a credible record of honouring comebacks?

thanks

Take some comfort perhaps that the summer promotion in the UK starts this week on 15th May, so perhaps we'll see some balance in prices restored.
I'm not so sure about that. As an example, Grays of Westminster are currently selling the Z7 with the offer: "Save £275 with this special price until May 14!". Coincidentally this is the day before the new "Nikon Summer Promotion" starts - as part of which the Z7 will be "£270 off". So it may simply be the case of replacing one offer by another offer - we will find out on the 15th.

Admittedly there are some reductions in the Summer Promotion (e.g £180 off the Z NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8 S) which are completely new.

Panamoz have a 3-year warranty - you get a quote from Nikon UK for the repair and then Panamoz transfer the money to your PayPal account the same day.

Einfinity make you send the camera or lens back to Hong Kong, and their one-year warranty only covers labour costs and not parts. But they are a lot cheaper than Panamoz.

I personally wouldn't order from any other grey importer than these two companies, which have both been around for a long while and have great feedback.

Thanks for this info. Good to know :-)

I think that like most global consumer producers ( cf apple and msf ) they seek to maximise profits by geographically segmenting the market and try to minimise cross market leakage by limiting warranties or keeping as tight a grip as they can on their distribution channels and so on.

Basically they will tend towards charging what is going to give them the max profit in the medium term in any particular region.

As a consumer, in the uk, all i can do to counter this is use the grey market. Fortunately, that 'leakage' channel is quite effective here.

Unfortunately, this is killing off high street camera retailers.

The difference in prices are just staggering sometimes.

As Hong Kong is a former territory of Britain there is something called a Memoranda of Understanding which enables the grey importers to complete the customs paperwork in Hong Kong. We wouldn't be able to get such cheap grey imports otherwise.
