Kai's review, Ricoh's QC needs improvement, but he likes it

Ricoh seems to be selling a lot of these!

Rob
Let’s hope so. The trend has been going towards bigger cameras and bigger lenses. Maybe the success of this camera could tempt companies to make some next level small cameras.
Looks promising.

I think what happens there is that reviewers are either new to the GR or that these things just don’t matter to them. For me, the lack of 4:3 and the removal of the dials/switches you love are non Issues, but I respect that you like them.
This is well said, I can also respect that Harold and others have issues with the GR III like the 4:3. It is fair enough Harold or anyone make these judgements for yourself, no argument there.
Well, thank you to John and You for that
I firmly suspect that Ricoh do not make sensors, so, they would have HAD to buy someone elses for the GR III, most likely Sony.
Yes for sure the GR aps all have Sony sensors
That said I suspect the only 24Mpixel sensors available in APSC in quantity would have ALL been 3:2 NATIVE ratios.
well yeah by definition they have the 3;2 ratio if they are APSC sensors ;)
So the only thing Ricoh could do it include a 4:3 mode and lose some pixels.
Absolutely. and this is what they did on the GRI and GRII. Plus to be thorough those two models also had their LCD with a 4;3 ratio
I have done a research posting on the old Ricoh forum where I detailed the pixels output in RAW and jpg for each mode and losing pixels from the native sensor is what happened in the GR and GR II models.
Yes absolutely. kind of the same way when you shoot with a 35mm crop in the native 3;2 ratio

Harold
It would be nice to see a 40mm crop mode as well. A friend loaned my Zuiko 40mm and has become a convert. I used that 40 a lot. Even with the loss of cropping 40mm and 4:3 I think that big sensor could still handle it and yield a good image. Time to calculate.
I wish they’d go one step further and just release a 40mm fov camera. Seems now is the time with the GR3 selling well. The GR3 needs a brother.

Hello

glad to read that you have joined the lust of photographers who enjoy the 40mm fov and feel this is also a great focal length for street photography and normal subjects

i have been asking for years that Ricoh customize the crop to let people choose which crop they want between 35, 40 & 50

Harold

Haha. Perhaps. But that wasn’t his conclusion. He called it a future classic. Heck I can see room for QC improvement on quite a few mass market electronic devices. It may be a fair call time will tell.

The camera era is in a league of its own for its purpose. There is no point and shoot in this era that comes close.
Even if he says "i totally love it", the rest of the review and Kay's body language says "meh".

The duration of the video says it all.
Amazing insight you have there.

Im more of a 50mm fan, but in this canera style I think I’d rather have a 40mm. I don’t want to crop though... so I’d like a 27-30mm lens on a GR3 body kind of like sigma does with their fixed lens cameras.

LOL....his "body language?" What can be said about such comments?

Good grief.

For this style of camera I would prefer 50mm with MFT sensor or a 1” at a pinch

Why? APSC is the sweet spot for size, image quality, high iso, and price. It would have to be a lot smaller for me to go 1”.
