What is the safest way to detach the hood on the detachable version? I can only find videos on shaving the hood off. I don't know how to pop it off or where to hold to twist it off. Thanks for any advice!

Brother Rika !

My Rokinon 24 1.4 had a real stiff detachment too - never had it with a Canon - it kind of freaked me out too.

Rico how did you get the hood off. Can't figure it out.

Thank you.
The hood on the mirrorless 8mm f/2.8 is fixed and is also the attachment point for the lens cap.

The hood for the DSLR 8mm f/3.5, later version with the red ring in front of the aperture ring, is a bayonet fitting, so it's just a quarter turn clockwise, as seen from the viewfinder end. The hood for the first DSLR 8mm f/3.5 version, with the gold ring at the front, is part of the lens body.

The image circle for any of those 8mm lenses is about 28mm diameter, so you're not going to get a complete circle on a 36×24mm sensor if you do remove the hood. You would need to adapt the lens to a 44×33mm sensor camera for that.
