Oh my gosh! Latest info from my dealer.

Will Canon release an update to the 1D? Sure, but only when the
market is ready. My guess is sometime next year.
And based upon what's being written by those around these here forums, the market is clearly clammoring for the next model.

Anybody here, doesn't want a new model to come out? :-)

I think this forum would like a new pro DSLR from each manuafacturer pretty much every year at a maximum. People hear will never tire of a new toy to talk about.

But when you look at what Canon sell- pretty much from the 1Ds through to the 300D, its clear that they are leading the field across the DSLR market.

Sure, they shouldn't get complacent, but by the same token, given offerings from Nikon/ Kodak et al and the huge investment Canon have made in digital SLR's, I think they'd be wisest to simply let the current range ride. The Nikon D2h probably won't beat the 1D, no-one can do 11MP better than Canon, no-ones got a lens and DSLR package for $999.

The lay of the land is pretty clear, I think. Even if Canon didn't upgrade their line-up for the next twelves months (yep 12), they will STILL make a lot of money, win a lot of hearts and minds and generally see a pleasing, healthy return on the arm and leg they must have spent.

I think all the sorts of upgrades that people "envision" here would simply be a case of Canon fighting themselves in the market place.

That doesn't make sense.

You might think that but that, fortunately isn't how things get done in the retail world. Manufactures are always trying to get a better model out each year. Have you seen all the changes in lawn equipment that comes out every year? :-) Computer manufactures are constantly cranking out newer, gee wiz models. Look at the printer market. And you really believe in your heart that sensor body manufactures are part of this behavior? :-)

Sounds a bit iffy to me.

Yeah, but how much of that is due to the players breathing down each others necks?

My point, and I think it’s a valid one, is that Canon has the wood on their competitors and I don’t see that changing for a while yet based on what else is out there. If Canon had a 1D upgrade, I suspect they would have hit the D2h with it by now. There will be one, obviously, but certainly not near term.

I really don't profess to KNOW what Canon will do, but I wouldn't suprised if we don't see any new Canon DSLR's until Photokina 2004. What's that- September? October?

they don't really have any info, but they all seem to agree that Canon will announce something, sometime in October.....this was their response about a week ago, when I asked them about a 1D replacement.....

of course, that means nothing, but we can dream, can't we?

Randy Corbin,

I'd like to be to photography, what Ernest Hemmingway, was to writing. mainly the drinking and carousing around.

my reasons why this camera will be out. I doubt it would 12mp and FF, but it could be 1.3 8mp or 8mp FF (at best).

1, I think we should all look at history and realize that canon will outdo themselves again. just look at d30 d60 10d path. better cameras and lower prices.

2, you think we lilke to know about the rumors, canon has real spys that constantly looks at what nikon and others are doing. There is a chance that nikon is coming with a FF (in fact popular photo talked about it) and canon wants to beat them.

3, why should you pay a lot of money when you can get an 8mp CZ lense sony camera for less $900? Before you send your nasty replies with indignations. I know the quality of canon photos are better, and all those things...but price and MP go a long way in sales and etc.

4, Canon has nikon wounded badly and they are going for the kill....

still a bit of regurgatative rehashing of the 85/1.2 stuff cannot hurt.
sounds like a new thread . . . lol
You might try the search function as there's been many threads
about the slow focusing speed of the f/1.2 version, which is quite
sharp when wide open.
